Please don't laugh and please don't take this as an insult but I was wondering what the possibility of hot shotting on a "part-time" basis would be? I've got a full-time job but would like to transition out of it over the next 1-2 years. It is a good job and I am grateful to have it (has nothing to do with trucking) but it is killing me and I'm just not that interested in it. I would really love to get into something that offers the freedom, travel, scenery, etc. of hotshotting. I have a truck that (may) work for such an endeavor - 2001 F350 dually 4X4, 171K miles; all new suspension and engine.
I have read many, many posts on many, many forums r.e. the costs associated with hotshotting and that you won't be able to make a living doing part-time work. For the next 1 -2 years I wouldn't need to make a living at it, just get into it.
Again, I know this could be construed as being stupid - and maybe it is just a pipe dream - but I thought I would ask. Is there much demand for hauls over the weekend? This could be a perfect way for me to transition in while keeping my current job until the last kid gets out of school.
Thanks in advance for any words of wisdom. If I've learned anything in my research it is that this is an industry that fosters dedicated workers who take a lot of pride in what they do.

I was just thinking the same thing today at work. I work four 10's and have three days off on F-S-S. I've got access to half my 401(K) which would amount to around 36K to buy a truck and trailer and I was wondering the same thing you are. I sure hope someone can answer, cause I'd love to get out of that factory.

It can be done unless you plan to pay for a new truck only working weekends. IF... you haul oilfield as I do.

I wouldn't be paying for a new truck. But I'm no where near oil fields. I'm pretty sure they're doing some fracking here in Arkansas, so that should give a person some work.

In that case I don't know. I don't claim to know anything about the other types of hotshotting and if they can be done part time.

hi me and my husband expedieted for 5 years best to own ur own dont recommend working for owners if you own your own u can work the summer months and fall months ur the boss if u own ur own god bless good luck

Its not only having the equipment you also need to be legal!You will need a DOT # and a MC # if you going cross state lines,also you need insurance to cover your cargo and liability as well.As for running on a weekend part time basics,I can't see that happening unless you haul locally or in state.

Thanks for all the help. I do realize there are requirements necessary to get legal. I also understand that if I don't plan on hauling over 26K I wouldn't need the CDL and I would need the MC# if I haul cars. If I do this I may just start out staying under 26K if I can find such work.
I also realize that if I am only working on the weekends it means local or possibly in-state (it's Texas so even in-state could be stretching it given a 2-day weekend). Again, I'm interested in getting started in hot shotting for right now, not necessarily making my sole living at it.
The question I guess I was really getting at is a) is it possible to find work, whether local or in-state, that needs transport in the weekend timeframe and b) if it is possible what is the best route to find such work?
Again, I own the truck and a small(er) flatbed trailer (it is not 40' but is 26') so hopefully that would help me with "breaking" in pain. -
Most businesses are only open Monday through Friday. If I plan working over the weekend I pick up on Friday and deliver on Monday. Some Saturday but that's a crap shoot. Whys everybody think trucking is part time work.
