Totally off subject and just sort of an update on training...went over log books this morning (good lord, they blew my brains with that) and then tried alley docking this afternoon. I knew it took skill to drive a truck and now I know(one small part of) why!! But I'll say it was fun trying and my instructor didn't cuss me out too bad!! Hahaha!

Hi, Im one of the grandpa's... Teddy said it best, " speak softly, but carry a big stick," not sure if those are his exact words, but he said it best and the concept applies today. Truck drivers are just people. We are no different or better than anyone else. That said, some are flawed and need some help with their people skills. Some are like sheep. They follow the trend of choice in the area that may be in at the moment forgetting their manners and upbringing. So, my advice today for you is simply this... turn off the cb, dont get caught up in the phony culture of the truck stops, sleep well and safe at shippers and receivers, (in their lots, with permission) Call them !!!! Check on local conditions... carry a portapotti in your truck...listen to the birds in the morning in stead of engines... all the best
NDBADLANDS and lilsister Thank this. -
Logs are easy with time. Cheating is hard and uncalled for. Just remember, Once you start/log in, you have 14 hours to do anything/complete your day. 11 hours can be driving of the 14 hours. Start your day with a 15 min line 4, on duty not driving for a pre-trip, fill the rest as you do it, then it will be easy.
Backing is something that takes lots of practice. When you get out of truck school you will have no clue how to back in the real world, you will know what i mean when the time comes. When you get real world training, make your trainer teach you to back at least 3 times a day in docks, truckstops, and all other everyday work related places. Just a few tips. Goodluck. -
When backing a little wheel input goes a long way.

Thanks y'all!

I agree with Pony, most students oversteer when backing.

Especially if its the first time they have had power steering.....

Logging is no biggie. I had to learn all over again when I took the job I have now since the last time I logged it was the old 10/8/15 days.
Please learn and understand the recap. I think too many drivers these days don't and have come to rely too much on the 34 hr reset so they end up ######## bricks when they start bumping up against their 70 and there's no "weekend" in sight. What's better, sitting a half day until you gain back the hours from 7 days ago or sitting a day and a half to reset your hrs? Don't be afraid of the recap, its how we used to do it before the reset provision.
FWIW, I'm on day 14 since my last reset and have plenty of hours availablelilsister Thanks this. -
Good point PackRat, too many drivers are relying on the 34 reset rule. What would they have done before?

what survey are you citing this info from? I've been to mega carrier orientations and smaller company orientations and both of them go over the recap extensively as well as require it to be filled out daily.
