Originally being from Pennsylvania but now living in California, I have noticed that a particular truck combination seems prevalent here: Class 8 straight trucks pulling trailers. This seems especially common with tankers. At very quick glance, these combinations almost look like tractors with double trailers, but a closer look reveals otherwise.

I remember that this combination is actually listed in the Pennsylvania CDL manual as "California Truck and Trailer". Has anyone else ever heard this term? Are there state laws or logistical reasons that make these common in California?

    pro and conra.....

lenth limit longer then for semi becouse combo has smaller turn circle.

Better maneurability in urban area, narrow roads and tight yards. That's why these trucks are popular to deliver gas on urban gas stations.

But backing is a problem for newby! I used to drive euro combo 20' container mover (BDF). I had two rifer container and I could acess places available for pick up trucks only

Trailer follows truck track in track.

But this combo is less stabil at high speed so I'd recomend not to overspeed 60 mph.

the lenth limit for Cali style truck here is 22.5 m from bumper to bumper, for semi is 20 m (but really I found that 22.5 m in Ukraine, but 20m in Russia).

Anyway weight limits are the same for any truck configuration.

These combos are generally used here for textile moving and as grain movers. but grain trucks are very heavy, up to 160 000 lbs, so all they are overload.

Why grain trucks are combos here? well, more a half scales in farms are made in USSR age and they are of 30 ton limit, so it is nice to scale tuack and after truck trailer.

    Ok, some pics

it is quite good but you need good hook not like us hook from your second picture and there should not be any clearance between hook pin and tow eye on trailer

we use this combo as well it is good if truck have to be used in city center because good turning circle and trailer fallows truck you dont need mirrors ....

good if truck need to be used sometimes as delivery truck(for example for heating fuel) so you unhook trailer ....or if it need to go in construction sites

also it is much more comfortable to drive than tractor-semitrailer

here is one from my neighbourhood

as you can see it is very short we dont have bridge laws so no problems ....

it is short to be lightest as possible and to be able to enter in narrow places and yards

yep, I agree, the combo ride smooth, but IMO, combo is less stabil on road, especially becouse of whip effect when you ride over "wawes"

we have truck and trailer tankers because of tight delivery locations. Very easy to maneuver
