After 10 years of driving and owning my own trucks I'm almost at the end of the road I have leased on to five different companies and had no luck with any of them in 06 I started my own company and in one year I had five trucks than in 08 hit and slowed way down in 09 I sold two of them and just sold one in October I can't find drivers I have work but can't keep drivers they want to be home every night
I stoped driving after I got my forth truck but now with two I'm back in the driver seat I'm in Pa now been looking for a load all day and can't find anything going back to Houston,tx that pays more than $1.50 a mile I'm sorry but that's what it cost me to run the truck and that's with no driver wages
Seems like I'm just turning over my money soon as a check comes in it just pays for parts, insurance, pay for the other driver and fuel I use to do all the paper work and find loads now I'm trying to do this from in the truck and it's not working I can't drive and look for the other drivers loads I just looked at my checking account and I'm down to $1,400 and I'm 1,400 miles from home and 2nd driver is 500 miles from home I owe him a check for $950 Friday and not sure when my next check is coming in
Everyone has told me to get my own customers and I do but can't keep them I get under bid or they get made because I never have a truck open so they just call someone else and they have a truck that can head right over how do small guys keep customers like this?
I get around $3.00 a mile going out but $1.50 or so coming back and sometimes drive 200 dead head miles to get a load going back am I doing this all wrong? I have its getloaded and membersedge and look on all of them
Should I find a dispatcher to find loads and invoice for me I'm not getting much done I'm spending most of my time on the phone or pulled over looking for loads for the other driver and if I sale that truck I would have to run run run to pay bills i have truck note trailer note house my chevy truck and all the other bills that total more than $4,500 a month with my $700 trucking insurance for one truck so do I lease on too someone else or what at $1.50 a mile I'm not making any money and that's all the load boards seem to offer
I run stepdecks if I didn't say that before!

    rodknocker and heyns57 Thank this.

Im getting out after 40 yrs and actualy june will be 41 yrs..... Yes the rates have fallen off but i wont start my truck for under $2.00 a mile plus FSC but now that even getting harder to do thanks to so many of the bottom feeder companies getting into hauling anything for cheap in their 65 mph trucks... Its hard for us O/O to make a decent living unless you have a dedicated account or book your own loads...dont give up just yet try as long as you can before ya throw the towel in.... I made it this long and im sure you can too.... Hang in there RW

I agree. You need to find what works for you. Every company is different. By the way 40 years is amazing.

I see them too the Beaumont,tx runs have been booked the greatwide load to fort lavaca pays $2,400 on 1,480 miles trust me I called on all of them Landstar even has one going to La but it's oversize 12wide and pays $2,600 I almost took that one but after permits it brings it down to $2.00 a mile and not worth the risk for me

    I

Thank you ...... Ive been an owner operator the past 38 of them... It use to be alot of fun out here and made great friends but i have to hang em up... to many bottom feeders hauling stuff they have never hauled before and to many rules and regs being shoved up the truckers rear ends... Ive done my time and im done now...Made a great living and lots of money but missed alot of holidays and kids birthdays but i would never trade it for all the tea in china....I know ill miss it but its time to pass it on to the younger guys and gals...:biggrin_25514:
