I renewed my CDL yesterday, and showed the woman at the MS Driver's License station my medical card. She typed in all my information, and then told me that I would have to stop in next year when my medical card expired. She also said that they would mail me a notice 15 days before my medical card expired to remind me to bring it in there and show them. Failure to do so would potentially result in a suspension of my license.

I don't see the point as to why I have to show her my medical card next year when I could show it to a scalemaster. I also disagree with failure to comply with this resulting in a license suspension. Maybe she spoke out of turn. Just thought this was interesting.

Most states are going to this... If you don't show in NC they downgrade your CDL to 4-wheeler unless you get a waiver if you are not currently driving.

federal mandate to "self-certify" your medical to keep your license now.

The other option is to just claim that you are "exempt". but you still need to do it with the DMV.

Your license will not be "suspended" but you will be disqualified from operating a CMV. Mississippi DPS/Highway Patrol does seem to have difficulty with the difference between a suspension and a disqualification. With the requirement to provide a current medical certificate to the state you will no longer be required to carry it with you when operating a CMV.

    Best regards

I'm glad Texas isn't doing this crap (yet).

If these states are going to require current medical cards for CDL holders, then they should make ALL drivers do this. Look at all the senior citizens crashing into buildings.

They are in the middle of trying to implement this new way of thinking. Eventually doctors will be approved prior by the DOT and will have access to communicate with the state DOT via computers. Meanwhile the drivers are stuck doing the dirty work and have to show updates in person. I don't see why the doctors just can't send a copy of the long form to the state right now. He is capable of putting your DL# on the form.

Update medical, update license/hazmat, update twic. None of them are synchronized. Pain in the caboose.

That can be anyone. Anyone over 40, overweight is a higher risk. You don't see senior citizens that are bipolar or have ADD. :)

Yep, just faxed my certification and copy of med card to DMV so I could renew my.CDL next month.
Doc says next time (in 2 years) He will need to send me for a sleep test due to my weight, DMV says I need to keep current copy of of my card on file...
Guess the future has been decided, two years from now will be my retirement party.:D
