I drove #9204 486,000-plus miles over 3-1/2 years and never put a scratch on it. I drove into Canada; way down to the border at National City, CA; down to Brownsville, TX; up into Seattle; into Chicago more times than I can count, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Miami, Key West NAS, Boston, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, et cetera. I was always very aware of my surroundings and drove slowly when the conditions warranted it. One of the very first things I ever learned as a green-as-onions trucker way back in January 1994 when I first started was "You can almost never get into trouble by driving too slow." Think about that. Another thing I developed on my own is "If you think you're going too fast, you are." Those two ideals have saved my assets more than once. If just 10% more drivers thought like I do, we'd have 90% fewer accidents...
Drivers destroy trucks because they do not own the vehicle. They have no vested interest in it remaining in service. So they get fired. What do they do? Go get another job, simple as that. There is always a company looking for a driver. You just have to find the one that will take you and your atrocious record. It may take time, but you will find that job if you look. If you screw up continually or really destroy a truck, you may find yourself stocking shelves at Walmart-- which is prob'ly where you really belong. So new truckers: DRIVE SLOWLY. DRIVE SMART. It ain't where you are right now; it's where you'll be 30 seconds from now. Think ahead. Look far, far down the road. Anticipate the future. Calculate your options. Formulate a plan. Be ready for anything. You are big and slow. The four-wheelers can out-maneuver, out-brake and out-accelerate you any day of the week. You have to drive for them because they are idiots. They do not look. You must look for them. Truckin' ain't for idiots...
