I have looked all over this forum for this question but no luck.
I work for an excavation company moving equipment. I was wondering if there are different grades of fifth wheels.
My heaviest load in a 320 CAT excavator. It is around 48,000 lbs. My problem is, the fifth wheel always seems to have a little slop. Enough that I can feel it when taking off.
The mechanic has rebuilt it and adjusted it but in no time I feel the slop.
Is there a fifth wheel that can handle the continuous hooking and unhooking of the goose neck from the trailer? I try to back into the hooks gently but sometimes that is tough to do.
Hope I have put enough info in this post to get some good suggestions and answers.

It may not be the 5th wheel, the kingpin may be the culprit.

I've noticed the same thing on our older trailers. Check the kingpin. They rub down over time. Might need a micrometer to tell. But it could be the problem like mentioned before

I do agree that the king pin is most likely your problem if a new wheel did not tighten it up.. Change is asap because it will beat the hell out of the new fifth wheel head..
To answer your question its a yes, They do make heavy duty wheels for different applications.. We run Holland plates on our truck and we drop and hook quite frequently.
Here's a link for the different wheels.. http://ww1.safholland.us/sites/usa/en-US/products/fifthwheels/heavydutyseries/Pages/default.aspx
Hope this helps! -
Those plastic grocery bags make great disposable gloves for inspecting a greasy kingpin, and they're thin enough that you can feel wear on the kingpin though one.
Peel it off and chuck it after you're done. -
Just because he "rebuilt" the fifth wheel doesn't mean it is good. The collar eventually wears out and the entire plate needs replaced. Jost has come out with a new plate that has a replaceable collar tho, for those of you that do a lot of drop and hook stuff.

Thanks for all the responses, the king pin was replaced not too long ago. I will definitely double check the wear on the pin and and have the the jaws on the fifth wheel adjusted.

May want to check the connections between the adjusting bolt, arm and leaver also.
I am no mechanic but you may want to check, something is indefinably wrong as you know by now. -
I will, I wish our mechanic was more receptive to ideas.
He acts like he listens but then the know it all attitude kicks in. -
