I can't thank you guys enough! I slept well for the first time in months. I think just knowing I have a place to get my questions answered is a giant relief.

I have taken your advice and just told the guys whom missed their loads this morning (and consistently miss them every day) that they were terminated. I have placed ads for new drivers. I have placed our best driver in charge.

Next question: One driver I let go this morning (called in sick 3 out of very 5 days each week) refuses to give me his load slips. He says he "hasn't seen them". Will I just have to accept the fact he won't give them to me and accept that I won't get paid since I need them to bill?

Try calling the customers and ask them to fax you a copy.

As for that driver?? Withhold his pay. Tell him, "you haven't seen your checkbook".

Also, from now on, have ALL your drivers use a truck stop faxing machine, to fax you copies. If anyone refuses, then hold thier paycheck, till they produce it.

    Great advice! Thank you again!

My next question involves freight rates...I have been told by some drivers they think we are getting a raw deal from our customers as per rates. Seeing I am so green at all of this, I think there is a good chance I am being taken advantage of from the customers. I googled "standard truck rates" and was wondering if anyone had any experience using truckloadrate.com. I was thinking I should subscribe but wanted to know if that would be the way to go.

The times we were slow on loads, I used hoploads.com, but the rates were very low...definitely not enough to make any amount of profit. Any other sites or places I could go?

    Thank you guys!!

Exactly. No driver in this business gets paid until they turn in the paperwork.

Also, any "loans" (advances) you give come out of the next paycheck no matter what.

Also, the funny thing is...we pay our guys fairly well..Between $700-$1000 take-home from a 5-day week and most of our guys have no experience and have terrible driving records. I was beginning to think our wages weren't competitive enough and that is why the guys were treating us bad. After reading this forum, I think our pay is competitive so I can lose the guilt over that.

It's almost a sure thing that the drivers you canned will file for unemployment even if the hey were on 1099's.

You need to have your records in order so you can contest their unemployment payments hitting your unemployment insurance. You will need to show any employee personnel records you have for those drivers. If you haven't been keeping formal records, start now for your current drivers.

For the recently departed, write down anything you remember (call-ins, lost paperwork, etc) and you'll be ready when that notice comes.

One last note Tiffy: you mentioned that your fuel stats are not consistent in the reefers- and I wanted to say it sounds like someone is selling fuel out of your tanks. Find him, fire him- and if you hear him complain- threaten him with prosecution.

GOOD JOB, I hope you recover well and get back to making a profit.

Lesson learned and disaster avoided? Keep tweaking and fine tuning things, make us proud!

I want to sound like a jerk so here I go. Farmers have no business trying to run a trucking company. You are getting everything you deserve, just remember the government doesn't rescue you when times are tough. If you want to save your business, you can pay me $100,000 a year to run your company.Otherwise, let me know when the Taylor Martin auction is.The reason I am so bitter is I used to deal with farmers running trucks and cutting rates and it sucks.STICK TO FARMING and I will not start farming.
