APU and weight

    Ok got a question. I have a W900 dragging a reefer wagon. I've been getting alot of 45000 loads and been running real tight on weight. Have had to goto shippers and rework some loads but its getting old. Last weekend I put my decorative tire chains on for the winter which adds around 400lbs. I have a tripac unit on my truck and is my understanding the with that on I'm allowed a 400 lb weight exemption but thats hearsay. My company is a joke when comes to getting answers and internet search isn't helping. Does anyone know for fact that we have that exemption?

    According to my company (Dart) yes we do get a 400 pound exemption. I have a ThermoKing TriPac, if that makes any difference compared to your unit.
    In our old permit book, we had a formal "permit" on company letterhead, attached to a printout of the FMCSA reg that spelled out the exemption.
    By the way, I run heav almost always, and have never had anyone question my weight. I even crossed the Banning,CA scales about a month ago, and I was just over 400 pounds over on my drives, barely under on the trailer, and just barely under gross...but they never questioned me.

    Auxiliary Power Unit-Vehicle Weight Exemption On August 8, 2005 President George Bush signed the Energy Bill (Domenici-Barton Energy Policy). Section 756 of the Energy Bill made changes to Title 23, Section 127(A) that regulates the weight of vehicles to be used on interstate highways to provide up to a 400-pound Vehicle Weight Exemption for idle reduction technology.
    Section 127(A) was amended to add item 12 that states the following:

    1. [*]IN GENERAL – Subject to subparagraphs (B) and (C), in order to promote reduction of fuel use and emissions because of engine idling, the maximum gross vehicle weight limit and the axle weight limit for any heavy-duty vehicle equipped with an idle reduction technology shall be increased by a quantity necessary to compensate for the additional weight of the idle reduction system.
      [*] MAXIMUM WEIGHT INCREASE – the weight increase under subparagraph (A) shall be not greater than 400 pounds.
      [*]PROOF-On request by a regulatory agency or law enforcement agency, the vehicle operator shall provide proof (through demonstration or certification) that –

      1. [*] the idle reduction technology is fully functional at all times; and
        [*]the 400-pound gross weight increase is not used for any purpose other than the use of idle reduction technology described in subparagraph (A).
