It's great that you are asking questions. Many make the mistake of being to proud to seek help when it is needed. Not even the most seasoned drivers know it all, and every last one of us started out somewhere. You're in the right track! Don't let anybody push you around. Ignore the rude people, you're above coming down to their level and wasting time on them. Don't think that being a woman and and being a trucker equates to having to sacrifice ANY of your femininity either. There will be idiots out there, that can't be helped, but you choose how to deal with them. As far as helping you out with some advice, here's a few random tips:
1. Walmart is your friend. You can park at many Walmart locations (not all, but most), get your food, clothes, many truck necessities, hair/brows/nails done, there's restrooms available, and you'll save a LOT of money by not eating out all the time.
2. Get yourself a 4-6 cell Maglite flashlight. It's a combination flashlight, tire thumper, and (if needed) ball buster.
3. The CB radio is pretty much a novelty now-a-days, not a necessity. If you like to speed, some drivers may tell you where law enforcement are. Some shippers and receivers still use them (a cell phone works just as well), and you can of course socialize with a CB. BUT! Be aware, due to the simple fact that you are female, you will undoubtedly hear trash on the CB (especially at truckstops). They can be useful to occasionally find local directions, or the cause of a traffic jam.
Best of luck to you!

Unfortunately there are some female drivers out here who are just nasty, cold, unhelpful to other female drivers. Saw one the other day, she was coming on the left lane and was going to pass me. So, I drove as close as I could to the right shoulder to give her as much room as I could and even slowed down a little to facilitate her passing. Was ready to wave and open a nice smile at her but when she passed me, she had a ####y face, didn't even look at me, just kept shaking her head side to side like saying no (in disapproval) and squeezing her lips as something wasn't good
I'm pretty sure she was doing that for me to see.... It turned me off...

silenteagle and lilsister Thank this. -
But not all of us drive only 400 miles a day. I hit my 70 in 5 days most weeks, but I also run a flatbed and have to secure loads. But I'm still knocking down 650 miles a day. Hard work takes time, not all of us can stop at 5pm everyday and play at the truckstops

When I first got my license I had to put up with a lot of BS. A lot of turn aways, a lot of beating around the bush from employers. It got to the point where i was ready to cut my class a in half.
But I didn't. I kept fighting, and finally got what i wanted. Had to raise my voice a few times, but in the end it was worth it.
Show them how smart you are and dont let them BS you. In this field you'll hear every excuse in the book if your a female entering this field. Ive heard my fair share of liars. Keep the faith chicky and good luck.silenteagle and lilsister Thank this. -
If I walk by and say "Hi"... it is not because I want to date you
If I stop and hold the door... it is not because I think you are sexy
If I see you confused and answer the question before you ask, I am just being helpful.
There are good people in this world that still have manners.Elroythekid, Onetruckpony, lilsister and 1 other person Thank this. -
I agree silenteagle..Just that finding people with manners is getting harder. When I do run into them it makes my day a bit brighter.

I've been out of the loop for a little bit but wanted to update. I will tell y'all that this truck driving business is NOT FOR THE WEAK!!! Of mind or body! You gotta be a jack of all trades and a master of none. Good lord! I know y'all are laughing at me and my naïveté, but I jokingly asked my instructor, "ok, so you basically expect me spin this plate on a stick, stand on one leg, juggle three balls, and play the piano with my toes?" It's a good thing I love a challenge! The first time I found all ten(ok, nine, since I didn't use 1st) gears without sounding like I was trying to rearrange the transmission, I asked if I had done something wrong because it got really quiet in the truck!! Ha! Anyway, have improved greatly since first day out(thank God because that was truly embarrassing!) and no more grind'em til you find'em! Thanks y'all for greatly appreciated advice! Will entertain again with my newbie inexperience tales later!
