    I have a Ford LNT9000 Semi tractor.

    I uploaded some pictures here:

    http://igor.chudov.com/tmp/Ford-LNT9000/

    The nameplate is pictured here:

    http://igor.chudov.com/tmp/Ford-LNT9000/Ford-LNT9000-0007.jpg

Its name plate on the door says, GVWR 44,800 lbs.

    What exactly does it mean?

Someone told me that this means that the total weight of truck plus trailer (combined) cannot exceed 44,800 lbs.

This makes no sense to me, as GVWR is not the same as GCWR, and if they wanted to put GCWR on the truck, they would say so.

So... How big of a trailer can this truck tow?

Sorry for being so confused, guys, I would hate to realize that I cannot tow a trailer that would be as big as I would hope to be able to. The trailer I have is the low boy behind the truck, you can see it on pictures.

My own reasoning is that GVWR is the max loaded weight of the front and back axles of the truck, and it does not include the weight of the rear axles of the semi trailer. So the GCWR capacity is limited by 44,800 plus 34,000 for the rear axles of the semi trailer, or 78,800 lbs GCWR.

    Who is right?

    Please, help!

    Thanks!!!!!!! :):):) :biggrin_25513:

    Thanks

GVWR = Gross Vehicle Weight Rating.

It does not include the trailer.

The minumum federal safety standards that the design must meet are based on the GVWR.

I know in NJ when they title a new tractor the GVWR is listed on the manufacturer's 'Statement of Origin' form around 56K. If this is a tractor and will be registered for 80K you have to pay to have the title adjusted from 56K to 80K in their computer b/4 the IRP department will issue you a regiatration.

I thinkl the builders are using a number that lowers the Federal Excise taxes.

OP is showing what may be a class 7 tractor and the GVWR may play a factor if you were conveting it to a dump truck for example.

    Thanks!

So, what do you think is the maximum COMBINED gross rating or a tractor and trailer that would be allowed with this specific tractor?

    That is wrong

GCW is what you are looking for.

Think of it this way. If you parked the truck on a scale fuel of fluids, driver, fuel (no trailer) you could pile lead weights onto the truck until the weight reached 44800lbs to reach its full rating. That is the trucks GVWR

In reality, you wouldnt do that. You are employing a trailer that carries and distributes much of that weight, and has its own GTW.

Another way to look at, and speaking in general terms only. Most Class 8 semi trucks will have a steer axle rated about 12000lbs and a set of tandem drives rated at 34000.

12000 +34000 = 46000 which is very near the rating of the truck your asking about. For some reason there is a 1200lbs de rating of your truck. Its not something I would worry about, and I would assume its been registered at 80K its entire life.

First clue would be the first line on the tag..... This is an Incomplete Vehicle manufactured by Ford.

So, if you were using this vehicle as a "straight truck" (dump, van, boom truck, etc) you would have a GVWR of 44,800 lbs without causing damage to the truck frame, etc.

Has nothing to do with legal weight restrictions as issued by local govt.
