I would never haul this kind of load again but just wanted to tell you what happened one time and see how some of you would have dealt with it.
A few years back I took a load of loose stacked watermelons to a farmers market in Detroit. The shipper covered the floor with straw then loaded the melons. When I delivered they left the straw and the 5 busted melons on the trailer. Ok, I threw the busted melons in the dumpster and they left the straw on the trailer. They did not want to do anything with the straw and told me I could not dump the straw in the dumpster because it was considered a fire hazard which made sense but nonetheless they still left it up to me to dispose of. I felt like the straw was part of the load and they should have dealt with it. I drove to a Love's or Pilot (one them) south of Detroit just off of I-75. There was a corn field next to the truck stop and a guy inside said I could dump the straw in the ditch next to the corn field, so I did. How would you have dealt with that situation?![]()
What to do in a situation like this??

I don't think I;d worry about it now. Did you leave something important in the straw?
kw9's rock Thanks this. -
I'd find a truck wash that washes out cattle trailers as they'd probably have no problem disposing of it for you. I've watched a few get washed out and there's a lot of shoveling and dumpster filling that goes on and it's not all just poo.

I'd probably have done much the same as you. Except for the melons. Those I'd have gave away to the buds at the Pilot (no Loves up there).

Whip out a blank BOL, tell them your rate, ask them where they want the straw shipped, and ask whether they're paying with cash or credit card

Back charges also for administration fees.Ruthless Thanks this.

I get that with a van trailer. stuff is called" dunnage", packing material. boards left from securing pallets ect. It's their crap !!!!!! but they don't want it. I try to dump on their property somewhere.

I would have done the same thing you did.

I always figured whatever is in the trailer as part of the load then it belongs to them. My job was just to get it there not to dispose of the leftovers. Its their baby they need to rock it. But no big deal because I will never deliver another load like that again unless the melons are boxed.

That's the way melons used to be hauled. I have pulled over at a wide spot on a two lane and swept the straw into the edge of the woods.
