In the "old days" when we still used tube tires with snap and lock rings it could be deadly.
Those steel rings could cut through steel when they exploded off.

That's why suicide rims were outlawed.

I was fueling at the Loves in Cleveland,TX, only have a rightside tank. I noticed a truck waiting in line behind the guy next to me, no big deal. 5-10 minutes later he pulls up in the lane on my right. Couple minutes later I go around to the other side, to do I don't know what, and KABOOOOM!!
He had an inside drive go while he was fueling. I didn't see his reaction but I was in nuclear pucker mode. Had I been over on the right side at the time, I'm sure they'd have had to put a cone out for a cleanup on Island 6. :biggrin_2556:

was changing tires years ago when I was working in a tire shop going to school.

Was putting a tire on a one piece rim and airing it up. Little bit before cages were mandatory.

our practice was to wrap them with chains at the time instead.

Chain held, the tire was launched to the ceiling and actually opened it up and then took the metal rafter out as it came back down.

The guy who had the air line in hand was resting his knee on the tire was tossed 10-12 feet backwards into the tire rack.

he was out of work for 6-7 months with a broken back. He never came back to the tire shop though.

fortunatly we use tubless tires now. Old style star/ring held tires were dangetouse. Rings killed too many victims
