When you wait for hours and hours at the dock, you tend to sit and dream about the things you'd like to have but can't because you aren't making money sitting at the dock. When you sit and dream about things you can't have, you get angry. When you get angry, you get more motivated. When you get motivated, you start searching for better jobs where you're home nights and paid a significantly better wage. When you find that there aren't any better paying jobs in your state, you get frustrated. When you get frustrated, you turn to heavy drinking, shady strip clubs, and philandering to take your mind off of it all. And when you take to drinking heavily, frequenting shady clubs, and philandering, you end up getting hit over the back of the head in some dark alley behind the shady club, getting mugged, and waking up in a pool of your own blood and vomit and all your money's gone.

Don't wake up in a pool of your own blood and vomit with no money. Stop waiting for hours and hours at the dock.

Since most docks are in ghetto areas, I get in my bunk and pull the blankee over my head and wait for a knock.

Sleep, p[aperwork, computer games, write, paperwork on it, plan next route, clean interior, do a PTI, shine a tank, sleep more, call dispatch with the information for them to make their call about the clock is running at the $200 an hour bill and listen to them go insane in the trailer or go inside to be sure they don't tear the trailer up getting their freight on or off, OR if in a nice city go in tell them that because they are now into your off duty time you're grabbing a bus to go check out the sights for the next 10 hours! And if in NYC have my MTA pass in my hands when I go in! Some things make dock foremen upset if they have to think about calling a tow to have a truck removed from their door! They know that they could be hit with the bill!

BUT sleep is one of the most important things you can do!

When loading I refine my trip plan, take a nap, and read a little if I have time. When unloading and I have a preplan trip plan the next load, take a nap, read if I have the time. Most of the time it involves trip planning and taking a nap. I'm usually in and out in 2 hours.
