I need some help from knowledgeable folks on the topic of setting up a fleet. We will be pulling tandam 48' trailers, mainly in the northeast. I would guess our average gross combination weight would be around 90,000 lbs.
The question is what will be the best combo of engine, gearing, tranny etc.? I have been trucking for twenty years, but must admit I really don't know much about the mechanical end of it. Gear ratio and rear ends etc., etc., Keep in mind we will need about 30 trucks, and of course the company will want the most cost effective fleet. I really don't see them buying high end , like a Pete or KW. These will be slip seated day cabs, that will be run almost 24 hours a day. I have a new boss and "she" came to me for input, so I really want to tell here the right set up.
thanks

What type if trailers?
Logistics in maintenance, what dealers are local and will provide customer service?
Purchasing a less expensive tractor with no local dealer network is a nightmare and if it rides like a brick driver turnover will be high.
What type of roads will the units travel? -
Box van, I get the feeling they want to go to lease. They are getting their teeth kicked in with repair costs on the trucks they own. We run mainly the toll road with doubles.

If they're about to lease 30 trucks they ought to be able to consult with Penske, Ryder, Paclease or whoever to get much better answers on the right set up for their operation than what responses you'll get from the internet. No offense to anyone, lots of time there is good advice here, but you'll get 10 differnt answers to any question plus the fact information you're posting is vague.
MNdriver Thanks this. -
I can tell you with great confidence that Penske has no ##### idea what they are doing. I was a Penske logistics driver for 12 years, and we had Penske equipment, and they provided the worst service I personally have ever had.

Ryder sucks never lease a truck from Ryder or buy one either no matter how well maintained they say it is. The mechanics only know how to change oil and tires. Anything else forget about it. You always have to get a sub truck when they break down. And when you do they are dirty filthy pieces of crap. The guy was mad at me today because I wouldn't take the truck he tried to give me till he cleaned it. And when he was done I still have to wear gloves to drive it. Sunflower seeds were all spit in it all over the dash and floor. Get going down the highway and in traffic the ac won't work now. Steer clear of Ryder. My company leases trucks from them and they treat us with such disrespect. That's why we are going back to Penske when this contract is up in a year. Never lease a Ryder truck stay away. I wouldn't buy one of there used trucks either.
