Haha sorry about that. Don't worry I rolled one off the truck too. It was a 19 ton full compactor can though. Hit a roller and popped it off the rails. Kinda jerked the truck around but no worries.

scared the bejeazers out of me as I was standing next to it. lesson learned...

I actually like these people so far though. almost all open tops, very few compactors. they tell me if the trash isn't in the can it isn't my problem. Allot of these companies want you to clean up around the cans but not these people. And if I get a can that is overloaded or is too tall and it takes them more then 10 minutes to get it fixed I just leave and they get billed for a pickup so I get paid as if I picked it up anyways. all automatic tarps although the one we had today broke half way through the day. The equipment isn't new by any means but I don't have to work on it so who cares. And the pay is good.

Let me tell you something. When I did that I had the military style hoist, which I would inmagine is not quite as strong as the more commonly used mast and cable hoist.

I've pulled cans up on the truck that were heavy, but I never knew how much until I got to the landfill. The heavier ones had me at around 81k on the gross, 11k over the limit for this state.

If you find that you can't get it up on the truck, you're probably not doing anything wrong. It's just WAY overloaded.

They are REAL good about giving me control over what I haul. If it is over the rails they have tn minutes to get it smashed down or I leave and they get charged. If it is too heavy I don't haul it. We were at a granit/marble countertop place today and that can was FULL of granit cutouts. that baby made the front end a little light when I pulled it up. That was a 20 yard can they told me they wanted a 40 yard when they originally called.... imagine what that would have been like!!

Man I remember my roll-off days. At least your haulin construction materials, I was in Hazmat, that sucked. If I ever had a heavy can I would try and raise as vertical as possible and continue to back under it at the same time. Try not to let the cable do ALL the work.

No no no, don't do that. You want it as FLAT as possible, at least to the extent possible while still being able to keep the front end on the ground.

Oh okay, I see what you're saying now. Only problem with that is if the can has wheels at both ends you may simply wind up pushing it.

The old 2-stick Mack trannies were ideal for this because of the VERY low bottom reverse gear

Ahhh i remember those times. Nose of a T-800 pointed up in the air... wheels well over a foot above the ground... was like cowboy truckin. I think I am gonna call my cousin back and see if I can run roll off part time for him. At least I can have something to do on rainy days.

I had one yesterday that picked the front up about two feet on me. The winch stoped pulling it all together. I'm under strict order that f it pulls the wheels off the ground and they stay off the ground to not pull it.

We are lazy. Anything on the ground stays on the ground. if it is over the top I have the choice to throw it on the ground or just leave it and have dispatch call and tell them to offload some of it before I pull it. There is a construction co that called for pickup 4 times this week and every time we went it was overloaded. they'd call and say they tok care of it, I'd drive back out there and it hadn't been touched so I left again. I got paid as if I had pulled it so I dont' care either way.

Getting some good hours too. I hit overtime at noon today and I still have tomarrow to work too.

I never chased one around. If it started to roll, I would just put a rock or something behind the wheel to keep it from rolling and get it on the truck. Now I really hated to pull a heavy can because I remember the truck had crummy brakes, and well you know how much fun it is to try and stop a heavy vehicle with crummy brakes. :biggrin_2556:
