Is it true that teams with US Xpress only get 24 hours for a reset? I've been with the company for 3 months now and this is the first time I've heard this. I always thought it was 34 hours.

What you are thinking of is referred to as a "rolling restart". Driver A delivers the load and shuts down at a nearby truck stop or whatever after having driven 10 hrs. Then they sit for 24 hours. then Driver B, who has a restart because he was in the sleeper for 10 hrs + off duty for 24, takes off and does a 10 hour shift. Driver A now has a restart because he sat for 24 + the 10 the other driver drove.

That's the common thing with teams. It's not a USX thing. It's much better than having to twiddle your thumbs for 34 hours before you can be dispatched on a load.

Plus gives you time to do laundry and a little shopping to restock too.

Actually glad to see this topic pop up. My team mate and I usually do a rolling 24... But I've been trying to have us never stopping. Trying to limit time to less than 10 hours per shift (that's driving and on-duty time combined). But man.. It's tough (lol just woke up and lost my train of thought) haha will edit once I am more awake!

That's the way I like to do it. It's hard to find a co-driver who will play along. Most guys think it's not "manly" to only drive 9.5 hours.

We almost never have to do a reset. Lately it is due to breakdowns however. We like to keep it under 10 hours a day and we can run indefinitely.

If your running hard as a team you will need to do a rolling reset. If you have a good FM that keeps you going east to west and back again you can do a rolling 24 reset and not lose a beat. I don't understand team drivers that don't drive their full 11 hour shift, it gets you further down the road and we rarely have to shut down for 34 hours for both of us to reset, unless you have 0 hours rolling from the previous week, there is no need for a reset. The key to this job is to pick up your load as soon as you can and head straight for your delivery. If you have extra time built into the load then use it when you get to your destination. You never know what may happen on your trip.

The rolling restart will be a thing of the past when the new regulations go into effect because both drivers will be required to have two 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. periods included in their breaks.

Kind of screws the driver who works the overnight shift.

But like Craig said, if you plan properly and try to keep your hours down, it shouldn't be an issue. I try to do this while running solo, I try to keep my driving hours and on duty not driving hours down to 8.5 per day and I never run out.

If you are running hard you don't have time to sit. Driving your full 11 doesn't really get you down the road much quicker.

If enough drivers voice their opinion on this new 34 hr reset rule that May come into effect next year, they (fmcsa) may change their minds.... The 34hr rule is the dumbest thing they have stated and I believe they only did it to help keep the public happy... but if the public was educated they would agree with us drivers...
