If you look at the 8 bolts around the outer ring you will see that 4 of them are actually nuts, do not mess with these 4, just remove the other 4 and that will allow the timing advance to be pulled from the pump can, also once that is off you will feel a ring gear in there as well, it comes out the front side as well.
I can't tell from the pictures, but do you have anything locking the pump can in place, if not lock the pump before taking it loose.

I meant the internals of the pump, if you look on the side of the pump you will see a plug that has a 9/16" head, pull this out and get a drill bit that is very close to a 3/8" but not bigger, drop this in the whole and rotate the engine over, having two people helps that way one can keep pressure on the bit, it will lock into the pump cam and hold it in the proper place for retiming.
You will also need to lock the engine via a bolt in the front side of the flywheel.
Sorry for my misspelling in that last post, I meant cam. -
Whoops, my buddies kind of figured it out before I read that post. The harmonic damper also came off before I thought to lock the motor in place. Now that we've made things interesting do you have a good way of timing everything once we start to put it all back together? -
If you haven't turned the engine at all it should still be close, there is a plug on the drivers side that goes in the front side of the bell housing above that there is a plate, remove one of these 3/8" bolts and the plug, you will want to hold pressure on it and have some one bar the engine clock wise it shouldnt have to move much to get the bolt to lock into the flywheel.
If you have both things locked to where they are supposed to be that will be the closest you will get to having the timing right without having it put on a meter. -
Oh didn't start tearing it down at No.1 TDC?!! LOL!
You really should have a service manual.
Cover up all those fuel line fittings. Any dirt in there will mess you up. -
Any tips for pulling the head off the block? Trying to pry it apart and not having any luck and yes all the bolts are out. Never seen one fight this hard to come off. -
I'm sure they could put something on a DVD or CD for ya if they can't get a book.
Mine's a book but if I had it digital I could transfer it to ya. Maybe someone on here has digital file. -

At CAT all of our manuals are built into a web based program we use in the shop. As far as anything outside of that.. I have yet to see it. There were manuals a while back before everything was on the program online but it was phased out and pretty much transferred over.
By the way, it is either a 3/8 or 12mm bolt you put into the flywheel for timing. However, it could also be 180* off so just make sure you confirm it before you assume its right and get it going together.
