Yes I have always shimmed the spring on all of mine with washers. Unfortunately it's trial and error to get the pressure where you want it.
-
what does one washer do far as pressure goes id like to get 10 psi at idel is what im goin for and the spring is the one sticking out toward the back of the motor isnt it
-
Yes it's the spring that sticks out the back of the oil pump. I put the washers on the plunger end of the spring. It depends on how thick the washers are obviously, but it will probably take more than one to raise it 10 pounds. 20 pounds of pressure at idle is really low for a Cat. How many miles are on your rod and main bearings?

15 is minimum spec. at operating temp.
-
What rpm is it truning at idle?
-
my cat runs about 25 lbs at hot idel fresh rebuild 65 on the road
