Stumbled onto this forum while I was researching o/o options for a career change. A little background; I'm 47 years old and a bit of a gypsey. All my kids are fully grown and mostly out of the house. I tried being self employed once before as a Real Estate Appraiser with my brother but it turns out that if you're honest you won't stay in business long so I went back to work for "the man" mostly to make the wife happy but also for a secure future for the kids. Now I'm looking to be self employed again and really think this maybe the way to go but only as an o/o. I still have a lot of research to go and I have to call my father who did this in the 80's but gave it up to be home with the family. As an o/o the wife would go with me and handle the business end of it from the truck (with the state of technology today this is more than possible).
Any and all suggestions and recommended reading will be welcomed.
George

Nice to meet you, George.
I'm Ellie and I'm out here researching, gathering, and assimilating information on behalf of my DH who's ready for a career change, also. He's around the same age as you and is excited about his upcoming training this summer.
I'm like your wife in that I will be joining hubby OTR in about two years. At the moment I'm in the middle of grad school and I would like to finish this project before moving on to the next, so he is gonna be on his own for a while at first.
Something I learned from the forums is that there is such a plethora of people posting and seeking information that it can turn into information overload. Newbies, old timers, trainers, recruiters, company reps hawking their wares (such as jobs, training programs, and pay) and perhaps more than a few HR reps and/or paralegals looking after their company's reputation, as some reputations do seem to be in dire need of repair! At least from what you read out here. However, like the others said, read as much as you can so that you'll see those patterns that will help you in separating fact from propaganda.
One of my favorite groups are the old timers. They tell the best stories and are funny as heck. Enjoy your time here. Good luck and keep us posted.

Thanks for everyone's replies and words of encouragement. If there's one thing that can be said about me is that I'll research something to death before I make a decision but when it comes time to actually make that decision I don't hesitate and don't second guess myself. To that end I have a good paying job that doesn't seem to be in too much jeopardy so I have the luxury of research time which in this case is good as there is a LOT of information to get through and consider. I don't have any false ideas of what this lifstyle is all about, my Father was a long haul trucker in the 70's and 80's so I know a bit about the time away from the family. What I'm looking for is an avenue to self-employment again and a severe change in venue. The more I research this the better it looks for what I want to ultimately do and to show how serious I am about all of this the nearest I can tel is that when I do go this route it'll be about a 50% reduction in my current income BUT a much more satisfying life.
