What are the tells to look for when pulling up to a truckstop which show if it is a good or bad one?
Can you tell before you pull in? Can you tell before you get out of the truck?
What are the tells to look for?

It ain't like online poker. Truck stops don't wear sunglasses or pull on their ears.
One man's dump is another man's dream. -
when the parking lot smells like a toilet .lol
-
Hey, true it is not poker, but you can still see certain things before you get out of the truck.
Example: If there are many roofing tiles missing off of a Red Roof Inn, do not stay there. 9/10 it is in poor condition. (I have stayed in over 20 RRI.) If the ceiling is dark, or has many specs of black, do not eat at that McDonald's. (The ceiling tiles have dead bugs stuck to them.)
So, anything like those? -
if there is barbed wire around it, generally NOT A good sign.
Having armed patrols is another bad indicator. -
If the sign says TA. Lol. Just kiddin. Sorta.
dog-c and keepntruckin Thank this. -
If you are the only truck there....keep on driving....lol

Lot lizards. Resident people with campers. Horrible pavement with smelly piss residue, guys selling pirated DVDs like at the pilot in Atlanta

Look for O/Os in the parking lot. If they have nice looking trucks, clean and well cared for, they are probably going to frequent the better truck stops. If their trucks are held together with duct tape and you can't see the dashboard for all the garbage piled on it, then they are more likely to be the "don't care where I stop as long as I can get a cheeseburger" variety.
MNdriver Thanks this. -
There are very few truck stops worth a darn anymore. I tend to not park at truck stops, there isn't much there I'm interested in except fuel and a shower.
The food sucks, everything is overpriced, and they all stink like urine. If you have to park at one try to do so well outside of a city, that's your best bet.
I drive in the same 2 or 3 states most of the time so I know a lot of places to park other then truck stops.Ragged Rooster Thanks this.
