When I'm in New York or New Jersey I call Inter City Tire. Never had problem there. They have a huge truck repair center right by the sea port and their prices on truck tires are the best i've seen. i have only used them for emergency road service once, but other than the service charge for the road call, I don't think I paid any more for the tire than I would have if I pulled into their shop.

Yep right by ShopRite/Wakefern in Elizabeth. The only place to go in N. Jersey. Fast and fair, you can't ask for any better than that.

Got majorly ripped by TA in north bend a month ago. Driver had a flat on a axle that is singled out 10 mile from them they came out and changed it putting their most expensive tire on 660. ( I don't even pay that for steers locally) and it took 3 hrs!! I change all my own tires and if it took me 3 hrs I'd give up. Total bill 1130 I could buy 3 tire locally for that. Moral of the story. All my trucks now have 20 ton jake and chains to get them in to a shop and avoid the major truck stops.

I always keep a spare on my trucks. You don't want to call road service unless absolutely necessary. I can't imagine it taking 3 hours to change a tire.

I dunno... Some of those stupid singles are a PITA. I messed with one in the winter for an hour and half in bitter cold because it would not move no matter what I did. I have been changing tires (among other things) for 7 years, this one was stubborn. The driver didnt seem to mind though because after I got that done he told me he wanted all of the tire threads off his axle... That was not fun. After 3 hours he was rolling again.

Can one person slack the nuts and change their own tires?
-
Yes one person can. You will have to use a long handled socket wrench and a piece of long extension pipe to give you the leverage to loosen and retighten the nuts. They should be re-torqued to 500 ft. Lbs.

Yes, check out this thread:
