If I could believe May would get me the miles to make it work, and that I would make much more than I am now; plus, allow me to customize/modify the truck, I would consider it. I need to have a good stereo system, some form of APU, and some engine work for efficiency and power gains; oh, and the choice to go the speed limit if necessary...
Otherwise, as a single dude with no kids, no rent, no car, etc, I'd probably buy as close to new as possible -- with warranty. Basically, I live in my truck as it is, and go "home" very rarely, and have run successful businesses; I figure I should be able to make it work... But I don't like the idea of being locked into a contract for a few years with one company, so a company lease purchase is likely not for me. Plus what I said before, need to be able to set my truck up the way I want it and go the speed limit if I choose...

The faster you go, the more money you are throwing away. It's been proven many times.
If you are interested and want to learn more about being an owner op, get satellite radio and listen to Kevin Rutherford on Road Dog 106. Every night at 10 mst and on the weekends from 2 mst to 5 mst. He gives really great info and advice on how to save money and put more in your pocket.l2rr2l Thanks this. -
MAY's lease/purchase price on the trucks is fair market value .. and remember, MAY trucks are LOADED! Good luck finding all the options MAY has in their trucks (I been looking for 8 months).
.. And yes, you can see the complete history of a truck you choose, everything to the last bolt replaced. -
No wife, but do support my disabled Mom. Also, my child support is finally done. I have low bills...
Either way, as an Owner/Op ya still make at least the same, but should make more than a company driver. And yer working to pay off yer own truck... YOUR TRUCK!
And as far as the "Being Stuck in a Contract for a couple/few years" ... Really? So gaurenteed work for the next few years in this economy is a bad thing? .. Think again!
Remember .. MAY generates more revenue from an Owner/Op Truck than a Compnay Truck. Yes, they keep the Owner/Ops Moving .. after all, if you don't succeed, they dont make money from you. And what is the point of MAY selling you a truck if you can't make the payments? -
I do realize that speed kills (the wallet), but all those times were I was driving for 4 or 5 hours straight trying to get a load in on time, not eating, or drinking water (didn't wanna have to pee), or stopping to stretch and barely getting there, maybe 2-10 mins on my clock... I just want to have the choice to go faster if I need to or want to. As well as passing those other slow trucks, and getting what I think would be more efficient runs at hills and in the rollers; instead of coasting up until the speed drops low enough for the throttle to kick back in, then waiting for the turbo to spool back up, by that time, your speed has dropped below 60, then you use more fuel climbing that hill. I know I would have better MPG just from eliminating that.
And yeah, I agree, May trucks are sweet, and I've even thought about maybe buying the one I have as it's been so reliable. But again, they would have to allow me to do some mods, i.e.: stereo, engine work, APU, and a few exterior things... And they'd have to at least bump the limiter to 65-67.
Then I would have to believe I would get far more miles than I am now for me to accept the idea of signing a multi-year contract
And yep, was out almost 4 months before going home for 4 days. Was about to stay out over 3 months again this time, but decided to slip a weekend in there, because you're right, it doesn't seem like I'm making more by staying out so long... -
Paloma, I saw you post after submitting mine. How much modifying of the truck do they allow? Because, it would be worth it to me buying a truck elsewhere in order to set it up the way I want. I mean, it's essentially my house, and I really can't stand the super-cr#ppy speakers this thing has...

I finally decided to activate my Sirius, boy am I glad I did!!! Can't believe I waited so long! And I just heard Kevin's show for the first time last night in fact! Very impressed, and you're right, I'll be listening and calling in even...

You can "modify" the truck to a point .. The reason they don't allow ya to go crazy is incase you turn the truck back in. Then they would have to spend Thousands to put her back to stock for re-sale.
Little things can be done and of course you can change the stereo system.. just keep the old one just in case.
I agree with you on the Speed limiter .. unfortunatly, they are at 61mph. Remember, you can always save yer money or get a loan and pay the truck off early with no penalty, then do what you want.
My current truck is wide open, doesnt mean I driving 75mph (well, maybe just to pass and piss off the MAY driver ..lol) ... But do like the 63-65 range for my Detroit 60. Too fast, yer just throwing Money out the Window. But agree with ya on the Hills! -
I listen to Keven all the time .. because of him, I run a succesfull business .. He is all knowlage in this industry.
