In school right now for networking and communications management, but the job security and number of positions available just are not there even though it's been drilled into your heads from ITT commercials.
Yet every time I open the paper and look at the want ads, it's drivers and nurses wanted. So in order to pay off the loans when school is finished I hope to be OTR for at least a year and then maybe something local. If OTR is not that bad, then I might even stick with it.
No family really, I could stay out long periods at a time as long as the bed is comfortable enough for a 6'er to sleep and there is a way to combat monkey butt.
Dad was a trucker too so I kinda know what it is like. Went with him on milk tanker, dry good van, and reffer trips. He was eventually an owner operator, of an older truck. The horror stories are lenghty. After Being a scrawny 14 year old and he hands me the flywheel, seeing one side of duals lock up while the other spin on the day he was supposed to head out and having to fix it in the mud/snow, and doing a brake change in the middle of winter I doubt I would ever want to be an O/O. Putting chains on in snow is fun enough.

Sayin hi right back at ya. Good luck in whatever you do.

Don't know where you live but in the Research Triangle Park, I've heard Cisco, Lenovo and Net Apps are hiring people like crazy with degrees like that.
My Step-son is starting his first year of college next year and is pursuing a medical degree. He got a huge amount of money from one of the major hospitals in the Raleigh area to go. Once he finishes school he has to go work there for a couple of years. It's not bad considering he will start off at around $25/hour right out of college.
Good luck in whatever you choose though. -
The reasons they are always hiring nurses and drivers is because of poor working conditions causing people to quit all the time .

None of the networking jobs are "entry level" and when they do, they always hire someone with more experience, which ain't me. I can't get experience unless I work something like help desk. Entry level help desk is lucky to get $13 with most paying $8 to $12. That is what the internship was paying with the KC Royals that, surprise... I did not get.
I don't want that $50,000 over my head for too long making that low pay. Right now I do apartment maintenance, for $10 and it's getting old. It's pretty easy but then there are days where I have to pull weeds by hand but you are stuck baking outside all day eveyday.
I would like to start this and if it doesn't work out, then I still have the degree to fall back on. Or even the dreaded apartment maintenance. -
I don't want to be Mr. Negative;but don't believe truck mags B.S..You will NOT MAKE $50,000 right out the gate..Many company driver'S never make that.Reality check.SuperLiner Thanks this.

I am in no way expecting to make 50g's out of the gate. That is something college and trucking recruiters say. If you do stick with trucking for at least 3-5 years, and drove hard, would it be safe to say the pay after the first 2 years would be ~$38,000 to $40,000. Because with 3-5 years of help desk, I think you would barley make the $25,000 mark. That difference will help me pay off the 50 grand college loan I will have to start paying 6 months after graduation. That is if you can find a help desk job and land it and not get laid off, and IT is always the first to get laid off.

You can make 35k to 40k first year and 40k to 45k second year IF: you choose the right starter company, you have a strong work ethic(literally Driven), and you can adjust to the lifestyle. It is a gamble as everyone says or thinks they can handle it but the reality is once living it not too many actually can handle it. So you got to ask yourself " Do I Feel Lucky?...........Well do you?"

I was planning on Roehl for my first year to year and a half, after that Crete? Local?
I literately have no social life, what is home? I like to think I have a strong work ethic. When our properties were taken over by a different management, my manager put in a good word that I deserve a raise. Well that raise never happened. When the new company took over I was already 11 months on the job, they took away all my earned vacation and put me back to day 0 again. My friend that got me this job quit, then we hired 3 more people, they all quit.
The last guy we hired started in November and is still here. All of those months when it was just me, I was on 24 hour call for 2 different properties and I have literately been head first, up to my elbows in #### fixing pumps in a lift station. That would have been the nail in the coffin for most people, My stupid ##### is still there.
