No it is not common practice at all to use VHF/UHF to talk to their base/HQ. Many Drivers are Ham radio operators. And they run VHF/UHF rigs to talk to each other.
-
The ones that have company radios, (business band) are usually local aggregate haulers that are dispatched on a load by load basis. And a lot of them have dropped the business band and gone to Nextel.

Great until you get out of range of the towers ....
I was in Alabama a few years back and my c-phone was useless -
The odds is the B Band will die before Nextel will be out of range. While my cellphone showed no signal once in a while it was very rare.

Yep. It's called trucking, and nothing works perfectly here. Guess you could invest in a satellite phone though. . .or just use your Qualcom.

Well, as far as I'm concerned Nextel is just fine for business communications. But not worth a darn for any type of emergency service/LE use. I don't know how big the jail is you are talking about, or the type of RFI is generated in/around it. But from my own time working lock up, I'd much rather have UHF or VHF simplex. The old "KISS" principle is the best IMHO when your radio communications are quite possibly a life line.
Hey it all worked out for you then! My wife gets a little crazy if I fire up either the HAM or the scanner when she is in the car. (Interferes with her constant chatter you know.)
