be careful of what you asked for. My son is paid by practical routing working for another carrier and it's not all cracked up to what it should be. I still make more money working for maverick.

Some carriers dictate what route you will take, when and where you will fuel. How much you will fuel at each stop....I would much rather have what we have where we are treated like a professional and get to make our own decisions.:smt117

Yeah, I should be careful about what I wish for because even with practical routing/practical miles/etc. everybody has their own idea of what that is and how to implement it.
The whole idea of paying on mileage is a huge compromise favoring all but the driver. Why hasn't it been abolished yet? The tech has been there for years to throw all the BS arguments away.JimTheHut Thanks this. -
What would you recommend? Percentage?? Hourly?? Its not quite as cut and dried as you may think and with some nore experience under your belt you will quickly come to realize that mileage is the best way to pay. The only thing I might add would be a minimum mileage guarantee but even that lets the lazy drivers slack off. As a business owner I understand mileage based pay and I cant think of another system to benefit driver and company. Like it or not unless you own the company the plus side is always goin to be heavier on the companies benefit side than a driver no matter the pay system. Thats the benefit of owning the company.

Believe it or not there are thriving trucking companies out there that pay off the hub and hourly for every minute the truck is stopped on duty. By hourly, I don't mean $8 after 3, I mean $25 the moment the engine is shut off. The problem with companies like Maverick is having 1200 trucks to manage. It's much easier to choose the lowest common denominator and create a paradigm around that. In order to fill 1200 trucks, you have to concentrate a huge every into bringing that denominator up.
Maverick has done a brilliant job in this area compared to their peers. But this industry in general is in the slums. It's not hard to shine when you use a clean towel to wipe off the mud. This industry is ripe for true maverick to come in and take it over. My complaint isn't against Maverick. It's against the industry, and only then because I can envision something much greater than what it is. -

I did what I was told. And now I don't.

I think somebody should start their own company. While they still know everything.
