My husband is looking at pursuing a truck driving job. He's a reserve police officer and we're both working on losing the weight necessary to join the Air National Guard.

He's talked to a Schnieder recruiter a month or so ago and the only thing he has left to do is get a new driver's license. Right now he's got a Tennesse license because that's where he's a police officer, but we moved to Ohio in September so he needs an Ohio DL. He had stopped thinking about it several weeks ago but he's thinking of calling them up again tomorrow and see if their information from a month ago is still valid.

He was given a preliminary offer of a dedicated route for Wal-Mart based out of a city about 30-45 minutes away from where we live now. I'm concerned with home time - we've only been married about a year and a half, and we lived 9 hours apart for a long time before we got married, so I want to have him around as often as possible. The dedicated route would be in a 600 mile radius but they didn't go into detail about time at home.

We're not too worried about the pay, to be honest as he'd be happy with $25k/year but would love the potential to make $40k+. We're worried about initial investment as I'm a full time student and he's current not bringing in any income, so we were looking for companies that will pay for your training or let you pay it back over time, which it looks like Schnieder does.

    My questions are:
How often can he expect to be home with a dedicated route with a 600 mile radius?
How soon could he expect to start training/bringing in a paycheck?
Is there anything we should be suspicious of or ask questions about before he signs on?

I think before you worry about avoiding an auto, you should worry about avoiding CR England. Look them up in this section.

One thing to keep in mind about the dedicated route offerings. From what has been posted in this forum and others many/all companies are very good at offering this sort of job just to get folks hooked. But by the time you go thru schooling, hands on training and finally are ready to get on the road they tell you "sorry we JUST filled that job, but we have this OTR job available". In other words they bait and switch just to get you hired. I'm willing to be a box of donuts that this job is either a fictional job, or it'll be filled just like I said earlier. This is why they aren't real forth coming with details on home time etc. On a WM dedicated you should plan on seeing him for 34 hrs each week when he resets his log book at home. I ran some WM freight for a couple weeks and this is how its done. You cannot take a loaded trailer home (for supposed security reasons) even if you are passing right by home, but its just fine to sleep the night in a truck stop. WM dispatch is pretty efficient when it comes to burning thru your available 70 hrs before allowing drivers to head home.

i run wm frieght on occasion. my ded. run is general mills. some weeks i get good miles, some arent that great. one week might be 2600 plus, the next week ill be lucky to break 1500. they know i can run the miles, but i just dont get them. and if you never drove a manual trans before, you will learn. first off on the simulators, which are kinda crazy. but it gets you the general feel for the trans. then once u get in the truck w the instructor, you will catch on real quick. i usually get home every 2 weeks, mainly on friday afternoon or real real early sat morning and i go back out monday, just to get a full restart on my logs and get some much needed sleep.

i can tell you about SNI walmart trucking thou my experance with them
i pulled trls outta the SNI/walmart yard in Onley,IL for 3 months.
thou first if he is gettign his cdl thou SNI, you better hug and kiss him good because he will be gone for a month whuile in training and a month (or more if he screws up) with a lead driver..
you will start out with a single bed tractor that you slip sit(change trucks while your on homttime). then you get your route number, check the board and see how far(or close )it is from being done. i found that the refridged ones they can shell out 4-6 an hour to and the dry ones are loaded 10-11trls an hour.(clock your own thou, different dc's take different times, and remember im tell you stuff from onley,il dc)
then you will go and get your trl once done and go to the check out gate. then go to deliver it, most of the time you will have 2-3 stores with either ref or dry but sometimes your lucky and only get one.
now while your at the store, your standing in the dock pulling little stickers off and putting them on your load sheet. one per pallet. once done, ask them to reseal if you have another or if that is your last one, ask for returns, load them up and head back. normally if there is only 1 store in 100 miles or less away, if not, back to sleep and update your mac 40....
sometimes you will have a return load(general mills plant, dairy prossesing plant, ect)(have hope to get starbucks return, you get free cookies:) )
home time was ran at the onley fac at 5 days out, 2 days home; but if you leave say 3pm and get back at 8 pm, and they dont have another run, you can run home for those 12 hours and be back 8am. some ppl left everyday becuase they lived 5-15 mintues away..
now pay for me was a flat 120 a day- goes to almost 900 a week(they may pay by the mile there, i dont know)
    but i was a phase2 level2 driver, your hubby will start has a phase1 level2 driver which is 90 a day i belive(80-100 for sure)with out a rasie till 6 months total driving.
ill tell you one thing, i was so bored at times that if i didnt have my wireless internet and laptop, i would of gone insane..you are defally make the money there(if your making per day). i avg one day 24 dollars a mile( yes a mile, the store was 2.5 miles away(0 miles on the qualcomm, lol) and i was coming off my34 hour restart so that was all they had for me(really didnt even log it) .. i was rolling in laughter
    but loving every mintue..

if i lived near a dc that SNI pulled trls out of, i would be doing it full time..
    (PLUSES)
you dont get all the extra bs from the rest of SNI.. you dont see OTR sni drivers because that fuel stop(yes, you fuel onsite) is not on there list, only for emergencys or if there deliverly is there and want to use it. the shop is almost always ready to help you out, even with a small pen hole or major axel change(and there fast because you have Walmart stuff/lol). you have to scale legal before you leave(cant lie about it either unless the gate is slammed with trucks, but why would you). you get to use the walmart lane(ask and driver that has ever delived to a walmat dc, this is a blessing. there was one time a cop made the guard roll the truck in because the 200 yard drive was full and 5-6 trks on the street)most of the time your making more per mile than system drivers(OTR)the deliver times are set at 45mph with 2hours per stop(i was always eairly and rarily had to wait to be unloaded, and your unloaded pretty fast, sometimes dry is dropand hook, never d/h a reffer)
big plus is that your wife can come visit you, i was a system driver so i had the bigger/trks(condos). you will need to go to the vistors room, inform them you are a wife of a driver, give them his 5 digit number driver number/name.ect, and get a pretty sni badge, flash it at the guard and your in.
CONS.. the showers onsite suck, but do work and are privte(think truckstop style at a TA in LA.
    no walmart discount.
some stores have a long wait time for them to come to the back.. if you dont have a cell phone, now would be a good time to get one, you get the stores number , call them ask for a supervisor, and tell them your there before you get outta your truck if you see the door isnt open. or walk around into the store and tell them your there.. remember, they are a 24/7 store and some customers will tie up all the code 10's and managers
be ready for some country butt backwards roads and night driving,80% of the time i was driving back in the dark(good headlights are a wise investment, sni doesnt remeburst you thou it was the best $40 i spend on the truck.

im not doing it now.. lol that is my cons...

tips.. kiss ### to the shop personal(thou not so bad they notice)
always be respectfull to the custormer(they love to call in)
be needed there or they will send you OTR, (dont lay around till 10 am before checking on your load).
drive careful, aviod hard braking.(those guys cant stack a pallet for crap and you can easly muck-up a load quickly remember, at times you are hauling eggs, lol)
bring a tv or laptop, (you will be waiting at the dc for long periods of time)
be a good housecleaner after yourself,(they sent one guy OTR because he was messy in the building/bathroom,and the STL say he can go F*** up truckstops showers, we dont want him here)

thou you cant do the rider program till you have a year in, my wife rode with me afew times, she had a week off and came up there to me. they didnt say anything to her because she had wore her badge the whole time she was there.

the reason im not doing it is because the nearest one from me is 4.5 hours away and i dont have a depenable long travle car..
i hope this novle helps you out.. im updating my att 8525 to wm6.0 and thought id tell you about it while it updates, best of luck to yall
any questions ill be glad to answer the best is can
oh sni keeps want-to-be drivers files up to 90 days(depends on the person you talked to):biggrin_25525:
major tip### dont quit because the pay sucks as you are just starting out.. i said those guess based on experanced drivers pay(forgot you was a trainee).. if im not mistaken, the base pay for new grads is $500 per week for a few months.. it will get better(trust me.i cryed once i started out with SNI with 1 year prior experance and saw my first depost for $1334)all turcking companys pay sucks for the first 6 months for new grads..

I work for Schneider on the Wal-Mart account in Kentucky. We have three schedules. 12 days on 2 off (off every other Sat. and Sun.), 6 and 2 (so days off rotate, and 5 and 2 (choose between Mon./Tues. or Tues./Weds. off). Its a good job. Like anything else there will be things you don't like (ex. slip seat trucks, unless you choose 12/2) but if he is reliable he shouldn't have any trouble.

Training lasts 4-5 weeks. Two weeks in Green Bay, WI and then 2-3 weeks over the road with a trainer. You start getting paid after when you leave Green Bay. All pay is direct deposit once a week on Fridays. Training pay starts at $350 per week. Once you are on your own you are guaranteed $500 per week for the first six months. I never made low enough to have to get the guarantee. He can expect to make 40-50k in his first year on the Wal-Mart account.

If you lived closer he would be able to come home almost every night because he would pick up all of his loads at the distribution center. The only times that he would not make it back to the distribution center and the end of his "work day" would be if he got a very long load(occasionally-maybe 1-3 in two weeks) or if he has a backhaul(maybe once a week) at the end of his load.

Here's how it works. He picks up his load at the DC delivers to 1-4 WalMarts and then either comes back to the DC and goes on his 10 hour break. Or after he finishes at his last WalMart he goes to a shipper to pick up another load and then brings it back to the DC. It is not bad, the money is very good and you always get back for your home time. If he wants to do it as a career I would recommend moving very close to the DC, that way he can take his 10 hr break at home rather than in the truck.

If you have any other question feel free to ask. I hope my post helped. By the way you're more than welcome to use me as a referal (Driver # 33508). If you do I and he gets hire I get a $500 bonus. Up to you though, I will answer any questions you may have to the best of my ability.
