I was in the FLORIDA NATIONAL GUARD.....If I paid Roadmaster will USX reimburse me like a lot of carriers?
Or will USX pay Roadmaster direct if I sign up with them?
Looks like most carriers reimburse at about $150/mo which would take a while to get your tuition back, but that's better than nothing.

Does anybody know the recruiter at the USX Terminal in Jax? If so, I'll call on Monday!

If you paid for school yourself, then USX will give you the $150 tuition reimbursement......but they only pay up to a certain amount....take in your receipts so they can verify everything.

USX moves freight just about everywhere.

If you are interested in dedicated, ask your recruiter what's available in your area.

Be aware that dedicated doesn't mean running a back and forth hitch everyday like a UPS/FEDEX driver pulling pups between terminals. It means you are dedicated to one customer, delivering to all the stores that they service out of that particular distribution center. Also you will be unloading all the boxes on the trucks by hand.

As far as the training, as a dedicated driver trainee you will do 150 hours with a trainer instead of 120 hours. Then after you pass your upgrade test, you get your own truck without the 8 weeks with another driver.

    Good Luck.

Hey Bigdipper, I'm going through Road Masters. My wife actually sent them my info since I was starting to get discouraged and about to give up on getting in a school due to all the road blocks I kept hitting. The recruiter called me and asked if I was still interested in going to school. I told her yes and explained the process I had taken and she suggested getting me pre hired with a company in order to pay for the school. She sent me 4 different companies to apply for plus the schools application (I had to fill out about 40 pages or repetitive information :biggrin_25521: and fax it back). One company immediately said no, then the next day USX called, asked a few questions and sent me a pre hire letter :biggrin_25519:! Road Masters then setup my lodging and so forth and I'm scheduled to start school on the 11th. From my understanding, USX is not cutting a check for the school tuition, I'm suppose to send the school the tuition reimbursement checks that USX sends me. Getting pre hired I guess was just a way of securing tuition assistance from the school.

Thanks JeremyC, I didn't quite understand how dedicated routes worked so that cleared up a lot for me. I'm not really concerned if I'm OTR, Regional, or Dedicated. My biggest concern is how long I will have to team with someone. I'm very considerate of other peoples space and knowing my demeanor, I would be uncomfortable the whole duration not wanting to infringe on someone else space or comfort. For instance, when I drive I smoke and blast my music (and usually sing along but don't tell no one lol). So with someone else in the truck, it's going to be a long 8 weeks not being able to be myself while driving.

Da.......thanks for that! I'm actually waiting for the WORKSOURCE WIA tuition to be approved anyday, that way they will pay the school so I won't have a contract with anybody........if that doesn't "pan" out, I'll do the same thing you did! I'm going thru NATIONAL TRAINING drivers school only because of recommendations and they have a lot more trucks to practice with!

As far as "teams", I agree with you 100%! I don't smoke and I don't listen to loud music (just part of being an old fart, I guess), I listen to smooth "oldies" OR DISCO....hehehe....so not many would want to ride with me!

Good Luck at school and USX...I may see you there soon!

The disco would be a deal breaker for me...LOL

Smokers smoke while driving. They team people up according to those preferences.

I'm the same way with music when I am solo. I got used to keeping the volume down while teaming though.

A smoker would be a deal breaker for me...any music would suck when you are trying to sleep bumping down the highway, LOL! In a month, I'll be on the road with USX.

I don't mind music while I'm sleeping. I'm the kind of guy that has to have the TV on to fall asleep. What creeps me out is those guys that do 10 hours in stoney silence.

Now, my first co-driver only had one rap CD, which he played over and over. I did make him turn that down.

I can tolerate any music genre but when I'm driving I have different moments. If it's during the day, I sometimes like the stoney silence lol or I will listen to hours of lectures. If it's night time, I have to have some up beat music especially in those wee hours before day break. I'm a night owl, but if I driving with no music or someone to talk to that late at night its not going to work well for me.

My other concern is sleeping while someone else is driving. To not be a trucker (yet) I've driven cross country on more than a few occasions (military). Its near impossible for me to sleep while someone else is driving. Every time the brakes are applied or the throttle is cut, I pop up to see what's going on. Sleeping while the truck is not moving, I will have the opposite problem, I'm a heavy sleeper and have problems waking up to alarm clocks. I even bought a screaming meanie a few years ago and that doesn't help either.
