I started a flatbed company with 2 trucks less than a month ago. I have 1 driver that has had 2 sets of tarps stolen during this time. The first time I just wrote it off as bad luck. I told the driver to pay more attention to where he was parking and his surroundings. I received the new tarps I ordered and they were on the truck for 2 days and were stolen again. I hate to think the worst of people, but I am now highly suspicious that the driver is selling them. Y'all have a lot more experience than me, so I am curious to how likely it is for 2 sets to be stolen in a 3 week period? Thanks for all of the advice.
Question regarding tarp thefts

Were they stolen while he was on the road or where he was parked for hometime? Is your company name on the tarp? Usually drivers sell equipment because they arent making enough money. Is that the case?
-
They were stolen on the road, once near Texas/Oklahoma line and last night at a truck stop in San Antonio. Both drivers leave out on Monday and are home by Friday. They average $750 bring home in the 3 weeks that we have been on the road. I try to get them as many miles as possible in a 5 day week.

I'm sure its possible to have 2 sets stolen in 3 weeks. But I'd have to say, not likely. In about 18 years pulling flats, I've never had a set stolen, knock on wood. Do you have decent lockable sideboxes that the tarps will fit in if rolled well? Tell the drivers unless it is cold, so tarp won't roll, they must be rolled right and stored in the boxes locked. Tarp thieves usually like to snatch and grab tarps on a trailer deck. Not try picking sideboxes locks.

I do not currently have sideboxes. That is the next purchase. I have spent quite a bit to get up and running and that was just one thing that had to wait. My second driver has run the same routes and has not had any issues.

I understand needing to wait before buying boxes. I had a friend have tarps stolen a few weeks back. He was down by Houston somewhere. I would advise my drivers to chain them down. Get a longshank padlock. You can padlock the binder shut, so a thief would need bolt cutters to get them. I only have one sidebox, and both my lumbers and steels won't fit. So I chain a set of mine sometimes.
Cochise Thanks this. -
i keep mine in my side boxes but if they weren't their i would chain and lock them down, its easy to cut a strap without being noticed but having to use bolt cutters to get them off would be harder,
i say get a new set for the driver and tell him to chain and lock them down, and if he looses another set it comes out of his pocket i bet they stay..
as for loosing to sets i think it is highly unlikly
also on the new set get the company name put on themCochise Thanks this. -
750 bring home in 3 weeks? I really hope thats not what you are paying them.

Average of $750 each week for 3 weeks

The only thing I've ever had stolen was a couple tarp straps... never tarps. Where do your drivers store their tarps? Were they stolen while the driver was in a truck stop, or while they were sleeping in the truck?
