wow 3 weeks this needs a bump.

I am due for a re up new contract discount with Verizon. I am stuck on the fence though because I think I want to ditch the Smart phone and use the upgrade on a 4Glte tablet instead and just go back to a normal run of the mill cell phone. I asked verizon about it and they said I could do it and could even keep my number by just adding another line for the cell phone to my existing plan. That might make it a bit more per month though so I might just have to get rid of my phone number I have had forever.

It's kind of a tough call. I think Tablets are the future mobile device and they are very redundant with Smart phones, but other than actual phone calls , the Tablet wins over the smart phone. Google Maps and Navigation looks freaking amazing. Angry birds ditto lol. Videos pictures etc etc.

Anyone have any similar thoughts about dumping smart phone for a tablet and going old school for phone calls?

considering going with a LG Optimus Q (Walmart Straight talk) 45 a month and UNLIMITED EVERYTHING. Is Sprint a horrible provider for a otr trucker? Keep in mind the 45 a month unlimited everything is a HUGE selling factor for me, not to mention GPS, Pandora, Netflix, yadayadayada.

I'm also curious about Sprint for otr..I love Sprint since they are the last unlimited provider and I'm sure I will find wireless tether a great use on the road I'm using an HTC EVO now and the apps I keep finding that will help otr are endless.

For the guys with Sprint did you keep the carrier or find you had to switch due to dead spots?

I was a Sprint customer for 10 years. I primarily run east of the Mississippi River. Yes, there are some dead spots with them (I kept my phone set to "Sprint PCS only" as my plan did not include any roaming). The dead spots, inconsistent billing, and high monthly bills were the reasons I left when my contract was up.

I made the switch to Page Plus, a MNVO for Verizon. I go through Kitty Wireless and I can not be happier with them. Page Plus uses the Verizon pre-paid towers but there are not many areas that are dead to me. You can BYOD, with a few exceptions...no 4G LTE phones, no iPhones, no tablets, and no GSM phones (except for the dual mode CDMA/GSM phones like the Inc 2).

Also, regarding Straight Talk. From what I understand, you will be on the AT&T network or Verizon network, depending on what phone you purchase....GSM=AT&T, CDMA=Verizon. Additionally, the Straight Talk Unlimited plan is not truly UNLIMITED. Straight Talk has an unofficial cap of about 100 mb per day. To give you an idea of what that means, Iheart Radio uses approximately 34 mb PER HOUR. I would not plan on doing much with Netflix or Pandora, and certainly no yada yada yada. :biggrin_25519:

edit to add: for Straight Talk, there are codes associated with the phone you purchase. An understanding of those codes will tell you if the phone is CDMA or GSM. If GSM, you can also tell if it is AT&T or T-Mobile.

Straight talk in my experience is very unreliable my lady had them for 6 months, data was at a crawl, every time and I mean every time I called her the call was dropped and she recieved my texts hours after I sent them

That's why I was curious about Sprint as they have truly unlimited, last month I used 9gb,I also would love to keep 4g so I can wireless tether otr, also maybe there plans have changed since you left them my plan includes unlimited roaming,my contract is up soon I could switch if need be, just really like Sprint

Sorry Boom. I was replying to two different commenters...yours and Kapgun's. I should have done a better job separating the two.

Also, during our last commitment with Sprint, they came out with the unlimited roaming but by then we were not going to re-up our contract. If a person can be on roaming and get a signal in most of the areas that I didn't using strictly the native Sprint network, it sounds as though that part of the problem may be a pretty good improvement.

Hmm...I'm not reading through 114 posts. Some people will say that an old flip phone is more reliable and will always work when you need it to. Others will praise the Smartphone. My opinion is to get a smart phone for all the features, games, bluetooth, etc...if you want a flip phone for emergencies, buy a cheap pre pay phone and toss it in the door pocket. No need to put minutes on it...federally required to still call 911 anytime. Hope it helps. :)
