Like I said above. I have a CDL A but with no experience. Would it be better to wait and find a small company to get the experience or just go to one of the schools like Stevens or England.

Found one place in Ft. Worth, 900 bucks for one week and with a mentor making 10 cpm. I could make more filling burgers.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Take your time and do your research. There are thousands of good companies to chose from out there and you don't have to go to the top 5 mega-carriers. Make a list of your wants and needs and start combing the internet. Once you have narrowed your search down to a couple dozen or so then start calling recruiters and get the finer details. Also good to have a prepared list of questions for them. Take everything they say with a grain of salt. They get paid by getting you to show up for orientation!

    Good luck man...

I would like to stay in the dallas/ ft. worth area. I ruled out CR england and stevens since they won't pay squat. Looking at FFE. Going to do some calling around.

    Thanks for the advice

I just got my CDL's at C1 and I believe there is one in Texas. The people who I saw come in with a CDL already were in & out pretty quickly. They had to do 1 week of classroom and then go to the range. If they could already do the backing maneuvers they quickly tested off the range, if they could drive pretty well they tested off the road & coupling. The only thing left was the 4 pt brake inspection & pre-trip which is quite lengthy, but a daily topic of conversation was how C1 in Texas was allowed to recite the pre-trip from the paper as opposed to memorizing it like we had to do. Most of the CDL holders were gone in less than 2 weeks (1 in class & 1 on range & road). After completing we were given a $200 check. So if you go to C1 through Pam or USA or one of the other companies they work with the company pays for the hotel stay (if needed) and the tuition. You are responsible for your own food and the permit fees. For me it was $30 to get Indiana operators and $16 for CDL permit. Yours would be different due to already being in Texas. At the end the $200 is given to you before you go to the DMV if you need it for CDL fees. Also going through C1 I do have a 1 year committment with PAM, which I don't mind at all because I'll need that year of otr experience to bring in bigger bucks down the road. I hope this helps!

    Try Watkins Shepard.
They hire new drivers with CDL.
10 days orientation, then out solo for $0.25 per mile.

I just got my CDL and start orientation Monday.

Thanks for the info on C1. I will give them a call Monday. I am looking for a place around Dallas area, so I can still be with the family. How is PAM treating you?

The C1 in Texas is in Fort Worth. I haven't started with Pam yet, I go to company orientation on the 18th for 4 days, then on the road with a trainer for 2 weeks. From what I have heard Pam has it's issues just like any other company, but I've heard that they are a good starter company. I will do my 1 year committment and see what happens after that.
