I've got a baby coming in December and I just got an article emailed to me by my wife about paternity leave. I was just curious if anybody that's a company driver ever requested paternity leave at their company and had it granted? To be honest, I didn't know they even had such a thing for new dads.
Anybody here ever ask for it or have it offered to them by their company? Do you think it would be something worth looking into?
Thanks for the input!

I had a friend that did that. Not a trucker though he works for Walmart DC in Indiana. Took 6 weeks off. You probably wouldn't get paid for it, but I imagine legally they'd have to keep you on.

You'd be lucky to get five days off. Six days and you would get indefinite paternal leave. The truck is your baby.

A driver is blessed if he can get holiday and sick days.
Congrats on the new addition coming! -
Check under FMLA. I believe by law you can get leave for the birth of a child (Yes, even the father). FMLA is not only for a personal illness, but covers situations like the care of an immediate family member or birth of a child. However, as was pointed out above you likely would not be paid for any of it unless you used vac/sick time if that is provided for you.

Federal law...they gotta do it. But, not sure the duration. But, true what they're saying, your truck sits too long not making the company money? Take a guess

I imagine he'd have to turn the truck in and get issued another after time off. They won't want the truck sitting that long.

I'm thinking treefork is right. I'm assuming I'd have to turn the truck in and then get issued a new one after coming back. I'm just worried about still having a job when I call and say I'm ready to come back. I've never heard of that happening in a case of having a kid, but I've heard of it for plenty of other situations. I mean, I know they lose money when the truck sits so I wouldn't expect to leave it sit for week or so, but like I said I worry about getting the shaft when I call to come back!
Thanks for congrats Condo Cruiser and thanks to everybody who replied so far! -
Under FMLA Law:

I think you would be federally protected under fmla. That's sort of the reason for it I think. So you can take needed time off without losing your employment.
EDIT: Edge beat me too it, also posting references.

With that said I took 3.5 days off my job for the birth of my child and there were quite a few complications. I worked on a job 4 days a week for 12 hours a day. My wife went into labor on Monday morning, gave birth about midnight, and there was some complications with the birth and I had to go to a larger hospital with my child for 2 days. My wife had a c-section and had to stay behind for recovery at the first hospital. We came home on Friday night(would have been the first of my days off) and I went back to work on Monday morning.
