I think " Individualism" has a lot to do with it. We are all out here just doing our thing and if the world would just leave us to it we would all be much happier. We don't need managers and supervisors and trainers holding our hands , we want to make our own decisions and deal with problems our way. Let us do our job the way we know how and it will get done, we are individuals who provide an unappreciated , difficult service to a generally unaware public.I think most of us take pride in the fact that no matter what challenge we face we will find a way to get the job done. If you value that feeling of accomplishment then I think trucking appeals to you.

I still like to "Truck" after 6 years but its hometime (or lack of) that wears on me. Out 12 days with only 2 days off. Thats just not enough time do squat. Some days im lovin' this job, and other days not so much. Sometimes when im driving back to the yard in my pickup after hometime, im tempted to say screw this and flip a u turn and go back home.

A lot depends on whether you wanted to do this, or feel like you were forced into it.

I chose to do it and 33 years later , I am still at it. I have raised 5 kids, have made good money. I just made the decision long , long ago to have my own truck. I can control where and what I haul. Although, you can get to picky or the business suffers.

I like it. It is all what you make of it. I have seen this entire country many times and never tire of it.

you my forum friend, need to use that 6 years you now have and find another driving gig.you read as if you are close to "burning out",a place i have been several times over my driving career.Obviously, that is just my opinion, but 12 days is a long time to have to dwell on negative things while driving and that 2 days off is inadequate to rejuvenate.find something that gets you home more often.12 days out is fine for a newbie but after 6 years,it will lead to what you are experiencing now.I read burn out encroaching if not already present.not cool.

again just my $.02 but to me,my opinions count. Here's hoping that you get far away from those negative feelings quickly.get a gig where you can do activities when home and get your mind and body back to a good place.yes i am the voice of experience-

Got to agree here. It's not as good a situation as it once was but there is still a huge amount of diversity in the trucking world. OTR is not the end all/be all of the trucking world. It's not even the best answer in many cases. Look around you, everything moves by truck wherever it goes. But that does not necessarily mean that a driver has to sacrifice his life and family to do so.

With 6 years in you are a prime candidate for just about any trucking job out there. Get to looking and start thinking out of the box. There is no reason whatsoever to tie yourself into a situation that's burning you up. Give you an example; years back a friend of mine was like you. He happened on a job driving a fuel tanker at an airport, refuelling planes. Made better money and was home every day. See.... out of the box.

In my own case; for 8 years I started and ran my own little trucking company. Now that was some different in Canada than what the O/O's can run down here. Yup, I wound up failing but that's not the point. For 8 years I did what I wanted to do and I don't regret a minute of it.

I guess that's a big part of the "addiction" to this way of life. We still have way more options than most trades do. Carpenters, plumbers, welders, electricians, etc are far more vulnerable to the whims of the "marketplace". Consider the highly trained "rocket scientists" who are on the unemployment line" since the shuttle program shut down..... where do they go? If Swift or one of the other Mega Carriers shut their doors tomorrow how long do you think their best drivers would be out of work?

Heck, I caught myself thinking the other day that should I win the "Big Lottery" it would be cool to build a "show truck", name it "The Last Ride" and do Trucker's Funerals for the guys. :biggrin_2559:

For me it was always about the skill. Becoming a more experienced driver. Being able to maneuver a truck in tight spots, shifting a manual trans and make it sound like an auto, backing up 2 trailers, ect. Not letting poor drivers upset the experience of driving. That took awhile. Now after 30 years I enjoy excelling in those areas and I still suck but just at a higher level.:biggrin_25517:
