Has anyone ordered or taken ownership of a new Kenworth in the last few years?

I sold my 2004 2 years ago now and I am getting that itch for freedom and being in control of my own business again. I am thinking about ordering a new 2013 W900L, but I am concerned about how the urea injection and DPF's are holding out.

The lack of engine options is a real downer as well, Cummins engines are trash and that has been proven by major work needed at low mileages, and the Paccar engine is a small displacement engine, no high HP or torque with that thing!

    Appreciate any help, thanks!

They're offering gliders in a few months. So far they say T800 and T660 is all right now but that could change. Order a 2013 glider and stick a good motor in it.

Where did you hear that? Also, I am only interested in a W900L, that was my last truck and I just can't stray from that long nose feel and look.

Isn't a glider technically illegal? It's the same as buying a brand new truck and removing the emissions controls on it. How do you explain to the DOT man that you have a 2013 truck with a engine that has a sticker on it saying it meets the year 2000 EPA regulations haha.

You must have been living under a rock! Lol

Gliders are legal (for now) but right now Pete, Western Star and Freightliner are the only ones offering them. The demand for Pete gliders have exploded from 50 a month in 2010 to 250 a month today. At one time there was a 13mo wait for a Pete glider. There are limits to what engine they will wire the chassis for. The options when my friend ordered his was ISX or 70pin Cat. They wouldn't do the mechanical motors or 40pin stuff. There have been several threads about KW FINALLY entering the market again.
The emissions standards are tied to the year of the engine not the truck chassis.

a friend of mine has had a 2012 W900 for a little over a year and has around 120k on it. The truck has a ISX and he has had pretty good luck with it. He had one problem with the DPF system throwing a code, but it ended up just being a sensor and that is the only engine related problem he's had. He's had it in a couple of other times to get a leaky door fixed. One of the times he was at KW there was a guy in there that had bought two new W900's about the same time as my friend, one of them was flawless and the other was in the shop all the time. For the most part it seems like there are alot less problems with the urea trucks than the older ones.

I am really surprised Kenworth isn't offering the W900L in a glider form. That is where the money would be.

Not very many guys are going to want to buy a T660 to shove a 600 HP cat engine into it.

The day they quit making the W900L is the day the best truck in the world is laid to rest. For the most part, there is not much fuel difference if anything between the W900L and a aerodynamic truck like the T660. I believe it all depends on your driving habits and what you haul. If your always pulling oversize/flat deck/double drop, aerodynamics won't help you, your fighting wind with everything you haul. If your heavy hauling your so heavy fuel mileage doesn't matter much, you get what you get. The place for trucks like the T660 is pulling a tandem dry van or reefer trailer coast to coast, now there you would see the difference. Get that trailer as close to the bunk as you can and keep it at 60 MPH and it would make a difference.

Buying new is expensive as heck, and likely not the smartest decision given the price of new trucks now, but there is nothing like a brand new truck no one else has ever slept in, lived in, or driven. You can start with a clean slate on everything.

The biggest problem with buying a used truck is finding the options you want. I want the sunroof, leather seats, full lockers on both axles, and a full gauge package, with extra wiring added for beacon lights on the roof, air cleaner lights, signal lights on the mirrors, things like that. It's pretty costly to buy a used truck and start adding diff lockers and gauges.

Have you looked at Western Star with the DD15? My last 3 trucks were Paccar units. After A LOT of research I came to the conclusion that Detroit is where its at as far as 15 liter motors go with all the emissions stuff. I contacted a Star dealer that had a 2012 4900EX on the lot with Detroit power. Long story short: I should have purchased a Western Star 10 years ago! Don't get me wrong the W900L is one sweet ride. It would be my 2nd choice. If you have the chance take a look at WS. Open and close the doors. Check out the space between the seats. The only thing I wish I could have done was spec my Star out. They have over 3000 options to choose from!! Really the dealer did an awesome job spec'ing the one I purchased. So far, with just over 26K miles no problems with the DD15. Mine is set at 560 HP and 1850 Torque. It's married to a 13 speed and 3:42 rears running through 11R 22.5 rubber.

That is a nice looking unit.

What kind of work do you do with it?

I just can't do it. I can't buy anything other than a Kenworth. To me they are by far the most comfortable trucks on the road. The seat goes back nice and far, and there is a lot of leg room, which is important when your 6 ft 2. I find KW's very quiet inside and the visibility is outstanding for a conventional style truck. it's the only long nose truck out there that can look good with a one piece windshield. The Pete's just look hideous like that. Between a 1 piece windshield and daylight doors, you have a very nice view around you all the time. I don't feel like I am stuck in a dungeon. Also, out of all the trucks, I find the Kenworths sit up higher, particularly the W900's.

There isn't a day that goes by where I don't miss my 2004 W900L, and after having owned one, I would never buy any truck but a W900L again.
