You probably already know this, but I like to scout those out using the RM paper atlas. They are marked with very distinctive icons so you can guestimate the MMs. I put that info down on scratch paper so I know if I'll make a certain rest area before my hours run out and also which weigh stations I'll pass by that day.

*Anyone use their iPad 3 as a personal hotspot to give the 720 wi-fi (or connect using Bluetooth)? I have a iPad 3 with Verizon, but could never get the 4G part to work right. So Apple is going to exchange it for an iPad with AT&T. I don't have a cell phone so instead I use Skype on the iPad and can consult Google maps etc. I'm not sure if in the long run it was a wise or economical choice but I've only had it a short time.

 

I called them about mine and had a new one in 8 days. Pretty good service I thought.

OK, I thought I fixed the issue with the RM traffic receiver, but it has returned. The 710 sees it connected, the 720 says Disconnected or Not Powered. Weird

 

Quick question, just got the tnd 720. Charged it and plugged into a laptop running windows 7. The computer doesnt recognize the unit and fails to install the dock software. Any ideas of what i might try doing?

 

Took unit back to Pilot and exchanged it. The new one at least showed it connected to laptop but when trying to install dock software, still would not recognize tnd 720 so would not install. If this is Rand McNally quality, I think I will be looking at the PCMiller gps unit.

 

Just got 720. How do i find is there rest area stop? And fuel stop does it show oonly for truck?

Easy- from the map screen, bottom right hand corner next to the direction box and below the current time, is a picture of the main page- press that- press choose destination- press points of interest- now depending on if your following a route or not, you have some options but for now, press my truck which will bring stuff up near your location- now you can see several options including parking/ rest areas so press that- it will bring up the rest areas closest to you.

You can find non truck fuel stop poi- I suggest looking over the manual next time you bring up the TND Dock software for this and other how-tos.

Before you blame the GPS check your laptop settings as win 7 can b quite finnecky with the whole permissions thing.
