I plan on starting my trucking career this month out west in the Las Vegas area. The problem is, I don't know what company to go with first. Any one care to make a suggestion or two? I will need to go to trucking school as well. Thanks for any input you can provide.

Hi VRD,
My wife and I also live in Henderson. We start school with Southwest Truck Drivers Training on Monday. We are planning to drive as a team for Interstate. They pay good for newbies and have a good pet policy. Hope to see you on the road.

I used to live in Vegas up by Summerlin on Charleston BLVD. I don't remember seeing any national truck company that had an operating center or terminal in Vegas. Schneider has a problem with theft there in Vegas so Im sure other companies do too.

I believe Watkins/Shepard has a terminal in Vegas.

Say check out Watkins Shepard they have a terminal in Las Vegas.
They also have a four week school and once you graduate you start driving without the need of a trainer for four to six weeks. They have a class starting the 26 of November. Good luck -
Hey vettboss, I live in Henderson to. Is Southwest hiring you as well as training you, or do they hook you up with other job resources?
VRD -
Hi,
Southwest is just a training school. They do not hire. They do assist in hiring though. They do not seem to have a problem finding any of their students jobs. They are located on Cheyanne in North Las Vegas. We start school with them on Monday.
Hope that helps,

Hi there,
If you are already set up witha school you may want to check out Apex Bulk Commodities in north Las Vegas. They also have some yards in California. I dont know if they hire right out of school, but they have been a good company for my husband and I. I know that they do have sleeper trucks, however we run as local o/o's for them. Before that my husband was a company driver for them in a day cab.
Good luck wherever you go! -
Great info people! I think my mind is set on driving for Watkins Shepard. I'll have my Nevada drivers license next week, then I'll apply at Watkins. Thanks for all the info.
