I still say a 1'x1' tarp is too much equipment

 

And hard to fold up, especially in the wind.

This is from the TarpStop website under Lumber Tarps. Bigger than the one's Autocar mentions earlier. You can also look at 3 machine tarps that will give you the added flexibility and weight savings, not cheap, but versatile and with weight/space being at a premium, not a bad option.

 

We have 3 20' lumber tarps, and we run 53' flats. Tarping can be a pain anytime the loads get past the 40', but we also run some big siding loads that pay decent. Steel loads are the worst with the 8 ft. drops, but the one will cover up to 24' with the flap. Sometimes it's a good thing and other not so much, just like most of life, don't cha know!

 

If you hate tarps, run a covered wagon. Saves a lot of headache. To add to this equipment, Go to Lowes or Home Depot and pick up a 6 or 7 foot long piece of 1" pvc tube and a "T". I glue the "T" on and cut a notch in it so I don't have to climb on loads to place my edge protectors. Just slide them in the notch and lay them under the strap. It's also good for when you have multi-tiered pipe loads that you want to bellyrap. You can put the strap in the notch and push it through so you're not twisting and reaching.
