Im wondering can engine brake stuck half way open or closed. My truck started doing something strange. When i let of the gas to let it roll it starts slowing down almost like engine brake is on, i can not hear the engine brake but my truck slows down. Even pulling 45k is not gonna gain speed down smaller hill , it will some but it feels like something is holding it back. Its not the trailer cause it did it with few trailers. Brakes are good, no codes and no air leaks if i stay on gas truck pulls like it did before. Thanks

If you are hearing the C-brake while this is occurring, that would mean the brake is being deployed. I don't know why. As soon as you release the throttle it starts slowing down, that would be right, too.
Does it do it with the cruise control engaged and set?Barca Thanks this. -
yup it does it with cruise control as well. it i set it at 65 as soon as it gains some speed it will slow it back to 65 ans stay there

Try making sure the C-brake selector switch is off, and check with the brake levels set at different levels to see if it makes a difference.
My truck won't use the Jake until 75 mph if the cruise control is set at any speed, but as soon as I turn the cruise off, the Jake will come on, but that is a Detroit in a Columbia.
Is your truck a manual or an auto-shift?Barca Thanks this. -
Its a 9 speed manual . Before this problem started my engine brake would come on cruise control only if i went 5mph over what i set cruise control on. Could you please explain in more details how to check c-brake to be honest with you i dont know too much about it., thanks

You need someone familiar with a Volvo, my experience with an ISX in a Columbia was with a 2000.
I'm thinking the Volvo has 2 switches, an on/off and level, probably 3 levels. That is the way the older Volvo was if I remember right.Barca Thanks this. -
Thanks a lot i appreciate your help.

Back pressure in your exhaust will do essentially what you are describing. In fact, exhaust brakes (NOT jake brakes) are just that, a valve that introduces back pressure in the exhaust system (oversimplified, but that's it in a nutshell). If your exhaust is restricted it would also cause loss of power and possibly black smoke, both getting worse as the problem gets worse.
If the jake (the c brake is a compression brake by Jacobs built specifically for Cummins engines) was on all the time it would be highly pronounced at low speed with no mistaking that it was on even at it's lowest setting.Barca Thanks this.
