I'm going to be starting school on July 16th at the north little rock, Arkansas c1 campus. I've chosen to have USA truck sponsor my tuition. I had some questions from those who have gone this route. How does the training I will receive at c1 measure? Will it adequately prepare me for the job or is it just enough to get me thru the class and get money into the higher up's pockets? I've also seen quite a bit of bad comments about USA, are they a fairly honest employer as far as home time and pay(loads and miles)? Also, I am married with no kids, my wife wants to come on the road with me as much as possible. Will USA have a problem with her being a frequent passenger? Anyway, thanks in advance for all the responses. Your advice and comments are very much appreciated.

I know they have a no pet policy but I don't recall seeing anything about not allowing a passenger. I looked into USA paid tuition route myself recently but yeah, overall I decided against it when I kept reading about "if there's any way to put the tuition up front, do it" comments. Many companies reimburse the tuition back and that way you're not locked into one company. I can't really tell you much more, only to wish you best wishes on your trucking career.

I have not heard much good about C1 or USA..But since your already commited no point in recommending other schools and companies you might look at ..
If you plan on having your wife on the road that much, Why not team and make twice the money ?
Good Luck with your new adventure..brinkley1984 Thanks this. -
My wife, for some reason is terrified to even think about driving a big rig. I actually brought up team driving before anything. I know going thru driver solutions and signing a year contract may not be the best, and I've seen a lot of bad feedback on USA truck, but I have not got the money to pay anything upfront and I really do want to make this career change. I've been working on tow boats the past 6 years and look forward to finally be doing something where she can come with me.

I went through C1 Indianapolis with USA.
C1 in Indy was a joke, essentially the only thing you really learn is how to shift. The job of the school is only to get your license. For that they teach you the script to follow in order to pass the tests, you don't actually learn how to back etc until you join your trainer from the company.
When I left USA in early 2010 they had a rider policy, but you need 3 mo exp before you can take a rider. It will cost 10-15$ / wk for rider insurance.
As for USA... IMO they are a terrible company to work for. However, just starting I cant imagine there are much better options. My advice would be to hang in there for the yr to pay off your school, keep your record clean and get the heck out of USA.
PS; don't take the Per Diem, they charge you $.02/mi for it... -
the C1 schools are just there to get your cdl. they will teach you how to back up but don't plan on getting a lot of practice at it. I got about 3 tries a day at each particular manuever. You will get to drive for about 45 minutes a day. they are there to shove you through and move on to the next student. if you pay attention then you'll pass the cdl test. you learn most of what you need to know from training and when you're turned loose on your own. USA has a rider policy once you're through with training.

I went thru c1 to get my cdl and worked for Usa. The first year was almost unbearable but I did it. Lots of mountains, snow, and no jakes then. Lots of NYC(first month by myself) The day after my one year anniv, I started to get great runs. I took a year off and went back with them. It's been a long time but I never, ever had issues with pay. All the typical stuff with any company. I've worked for a couple outfits since and had payroll issues that would never fly in any other industry but that's part of being a driver. Don't think I'd ever go back with em but it was just as good as anywhere else to get my rookie driving and northeast exposure out of the way. Also, the five grand note I owed and paid off that first year wasn't reportable on my credit record. I had a great trainer and made decent money. C1, well, I'd look to a community college and save your money but it worked for me. USA never lied about the dirty stuff they did, so I respected that I knew where I stood. Good luck!

So far I'm not very impressed with c1 here in nlr. The class instructor is not very helpful. I'm on day 3 as of tomorrow(permit test day) and hoping after I knock that out of the park the learning picks up. So far all he has done is just hand out cdl manuals and have us read aloud. We've done a few of the same pretests and checked them ourselves while he sped thru the answers without any review on his part. He has pretty much made us do it all on our own so far. He does seem pretty good at disappearing. And texting all day and telling jokes to the obnoxious guy that's sitting beside his desk. So far, after two days here, I'm pretty disappointed in the experience. Hope it gets better!
