I am looking at a 2000 Kenworth with a 430/470 1800 RPM engine. Can this engine be turned up to 500HP/2100RPM at a detroit dealer. I'm sure if i have my ecm custom programmed they can do the same thing. Was just wondering if there is any difference between the 1800 and 2100 RPM engines from the factory. Thanks
12.7 Detroit RPM

I thought i remember reading on here that they are all the same just a different program loadeded on the ecm.

Not all engines are uprateable, it depends on the hard parts. The 12.7 500 had a difference in the wrist pins, which was a weak spot in the earlier engines.
I'd guess but it would only be a guess, a Detroit supporting dealer or repair shop should be able to give specifics for your engine, as to whether the operating range can be extended to 2100 RPM. -
Mine was a fatory 430/430. It goes to 2400 now. Get the VIN or the engine serial number and talk to a DD specialist.
I bet it can be done

How many 12.7 series 60 could be in a 2000 Kenworth?? Not just different HP/TQ levels, but different prefix motors?

i drive a 2003 430/470 @ 2100 that would barely hold 1650 in overdrive and had the progressive shift deleted and the truck now turns a hair over 2250 on the computer that deleted the progressive shift.it is still a 430/470 but once wound up,it gets scary and real quiet if i just stay on it.i gained well over 1 mpg just opening it up to factory specs. 11r/22.5 truck and trl, and 3.73, rtx10
fuel mileage sucks but sucked worse before opening it up.i pull scrap metal mainly and heavy loads and a heavy foot make the 12.7 work hard and oil consumption is minimal.<less than a gallon between 15,000 miles change intervals. 670,000 miles and i idle as needed.period.
overall,a 12.7 detroit is a darn good engine so best of luck with whatever you have in mind. -
What is the progressive shift you talk about?

Is this something that could be on a 2000 kenworth and how would you tell without hooking up the computer??

if you go to shift in low range and it tachs out below 1500 rpm.
It's a computer setting that forces you to do what should be an automatic function for the driver.
You shift as quickly as possible at as low an RPM possible. You can climb out of low range and never break 1200 RPM.
Once you get into high range, you pick up about 100 rpm for each gear. Again, never going over 1500 RPM.
About the only time you'd need to tach out the vehicle is if you are climbing a hill.lonelyswmtrucker Thanks this.
