A properly maintained diesel can be good for over 500,000 miles.
Don't buy a Ford newer than 2003. I try to find a pre-,07 Dodge. People have also had good luck with Chevy Duramaxes .
You may want heavier than a 1 ton but the Dodge and Chevy 4500's really ride rough .

My last company had a few '08 and newer dodge 5500s they were reliable and rugged, the ride was good, but the seat left some to be desired, I am a short little sawed off sob and the truck is set up for someone 6 feet or better it seems.
