I am surprised at how many people say how trucking is so hard. It is the easiest job I have ever had and I love it. I get paid to do things that I would do for free. If you have had the hardest jobs ever growing up like I have, then trucking is for you. When I was a teen I worked at warehouses, factories, and outdoors where I would die after I got off work from lifting over 100 pounds over and over for 12 hours. As I got older and learned new skills I had the fancy office job wearing a suit making the big bucks working in a skyscraper downtown getting smiles from hot women, yes sounds like a dream but the stress made my head explode even when you got off of work you still had to stress and get things done.

After I built up a tolerance for those jobs, it feels like all I do is get a message to go somewhere, fill up, enjoy the ride, arrive, get in a door, relax in sleeper until they are done, check out, get another assignment, and repeat. I am still only six months in but I hope I will continue enjoying this job forever. I wonder if a lot of truckers complain since they think that something better is out there... like I said I worked those jobs that "everyone wants" and they are highly stressful. Plus I notice a lot of drivers who complain or say it is too hard just sit in their driver's seat staring out the window for hours when they have to wait. I have Verizon Mifi with Netflix so I watch movies/shows, talk on the phone, make music with my FL Studio software, read, etc. do a ton of things so I am always occupied. I do understand that it can be hard for guys who are married with kids and are away, that I understand but there is a guy I work with in the same situation as me yet all he does is complain.

On another note, I have been gone from this forum for a while ever since the admin changed the site's theme and claims that it is hard to change when I know the stylesheet can easily be edited to go back to the green color which was easy on the eyes, but oh well this is the only good trucking forum and I miss the members here. Otherwise I would have not come back since I do not like when those in power force a change on you and tell you to either accept it or leave. I am also an admin with a forum larger than this one and I do not force changes on anyone. I may create my own truck forum and show the admin how it is done but I rather focus on driving now.

been doing this along time now, still actually enjoy the driving part. lol. was a quality control dept. manager ,before and construction before that.

the stress in an office job can be bad !! don't miss it a bit. went to driving and saw my kids MORE ! I worked alot of weekends to get stuff done, when no one was about. I have been home on weekends almost the whole time driving.

the only stress part is the city or holiday traffic. maybe I'm getting old ,lol.

going to driving school at the end of the month. i, too, have worked many types of jobs like you posted. currently working in IT and am giving it up to chase a dream (ie, truck driving). I just wanted to say your post is refreshing to hear. I've been lurking these forums quite a lot lately and you hear a lot of negativity. The fact you have the same type of employment background as me and still enjoy driving makes me very optimistic about my new career choice. Thanks for posting.

also, choosing to leave the soul-crushing, cube dwelling corporate life is, im sure, the best decision i've ever made.

My hat comes off to you guys. I too (53 years old) had the hard jobs at a young age, worked in the corporate world ( with all the bs politics ) and owned a couple of businesses (cash flow, employee stress). I worked OTR a couple of years ago and just miss it. I'm getting back into it as we speak. Yeah there is some negative, but what does'nt have it's negatives. I feel very secure in trucking. Don't feel stress, I feel responsiblity. Nice knowing if I do the right thing, I will never be out of a job. Love having a tractor which I can set up and be self sufficient. I have much more freedom to live where I want. With today's technology it's better than ever (GPS, Laptop, Netflix, digital TV, ect.). My wife loves to come with me when she can.

And at some point I will have options to go local or regional. Oh yeah, and I love trucks.

heck yea...bought a new smart phone with a huge data plan. got all the apps lined up --> Trucker Tools, FuelLog, myDAT, FreeZone and of course Google Maps for GPS.

That's awesome. I can't wait to bring my son with me on a few runs during the summer. He's gonna absolutely love it :)

Well the work itself is not hard. Pulling a dry van, I get to sit in the AC all day.

It can be hard if you're an idiot. I've had some idiot co-drivers who always made it hard on themselves because of all the mistakes they made, because they were idiots. One even told me he became a truck driver because he was too stupid to do anything else. I told him he was too stupid to be a truck driver as well.

I am 30 years old, I left school at 15 years old . I was at sea working on commercial fishing boats all my working life up until I started trucking in 2010. Trucking is a cake walk compared to commercial fishing. When guys complain about being away from home for 3 months I just think "how about you try 6 to 9 months on a 100 foot boat 600 miles offshore in probably the most dangerous working environment short of a war zone!". Driving truck deffinately has its BS days and I have done my share of complaining about it as well, but as far as a "hard" job, it really isnt at all. I am not saying being away from family and friends is easy when driving truck but if you put it in perspective compared to other jobs, its really not that difficult to drive truck. As was said in an above post, some guys make it hard for themselvs through their lack of thinking and common sense. I think the problem alot of drivers face is that this industry is not there chosen career. When I took my CDL training course there was 15 people in the class and at least half were there due to extended unemployment and were being "re-trained" to become drivers so they could get a job. Any person pushed into this job as a last resort for employment is not going to like it at all. I remember that 3 or 4 of the other students were married and had families and you could tell they had no interest whatsoever in driving truck. They were screwed from the start, pushed into it to keep from losing whatever benifits they were getting. Those are the bitter, negative drivers that cant find one good thing about the industry as they didnt want to be in it from the get go.

Where else can you sit on your butt all day and make money???.....I LOVE my job. I get my load, my route and fuel stop, and then they leave me alone to get to where I need to be. On my down time I have my laptop, TV, movies, Netflix, and other things to keep me occupied. I am out for four weeks and go home for four days.
