I am looking to get back into driving. My goal is in 3-5 years owning my own truck, but haven't decided yet whether to go flatbed or go back to dry van. Three years ago I had 2 back surgeries in one year due to just beating it to death over the years. When I get back into driving, with the previous surgeries, would flat-bedding even be a good idea? I know it's physically demanding a lot of times and that doesn't scare me...didn't know if anyone in here may have gone thru anything like that and is still doing it?

Thanks ahead of time for the input.

With your back issues, I would definitely make skateboarding my last option

I personally wouldnt, But if it is something you want to do spend some time at a fitness center working out with weights doing dead lifts, squats, and some pulldowns and things like that and see how your back responds. I have back problems but have never had surgery and I usally know what to do and not to do but a month ago I slipped a disk tarping a load. Good thing the load was going threw the house but even so it was a painful 300 miles to the house.

Slipping a disk is tough to get through for sure. LOL I know, first time it happened I got stuck half bent over for 3 days til it worked itself out! Painful as anything, but I can laugh about it now. So far, with light-moderate exercise, it's holding up fairly well. While making future plans, there's just that little lingering doubt that creeps in occasionally.

Well, thankfully, 3 years later and so far so good. I'm not letting it weaken by not using it, just strengthening it up slowly and lifting far more correctly than I ever used to!

I fell off the top of my carhauler and broke my back about 12-14 years ago. Although I didn't have surgery, I was in a body cast for 4 1/2 months and pretty much out of commission for about 1 year. I also broke my pelvis and both wrists in the fall. It was a difficult recovery, but after pulling a box for 2-3 years, I started pulling flats and have been pulling open deck trailers ever since. I still have some problems with my back from time to time, but I can throw tarps, when needed. You need to check with your doctor and see what he says. As long as your doctor gives the OK, you could probably do it. I would spend some time building up the back muscles and be careful how you lift the tarps.

Yeah, Pardner, consult with your Doc and get his advice, you'd be really at wits end if you got into FB and messed up your back again, right ?

I was tossed off a 12 foot drop and broke my back, I tried to get back into flat beds and to be honest it was very painful sometimes. Depending on what you are doing I would never try what I did again, hope you get better and keep that injury in check.

My back is RAGEDY pain everyday, never broken or anything just years of abuse I guess, take your time, move and lift properly, wear a good brace, get a good seat and mattress for your truck and you will be fine.

Thanks for the advice! I think I'll get back in dry van/reefer first. Then go from there. I'm planning on at least 3 years to get everything squared away before buying my own truck. At that point (or before) I'll know whether I can hold up or not.
