My dad uses a '77 peterbilt at work, at a Gerogia Pacific, as a yard dog to move chip trailers around.

He had a question, Theres a hose that runs from under the cab to the intake manifold creating like a T splitter. From the T, theres a hard line running down to the fuel pump. So basically a rubber hose coming from under the truck, to the intake manifold, then a hard line from there to the fuel pump. He was just wondering what it is. He's wondering why it connects to the intake.

He said the truck was running rough and very crappy, then one of his buddies took vice grips and clamped the rubber hose shut and the truck runs perfect now.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

The hard line from the intake manifold to the fuel pump is for the AFC in the fuel pump to sense manifold pressure (boost) and in turn allow full fuel delivery by the pump to the injectors. The rubber hose should go to the fuel tank as a way to recover fuel in the event of an AFC diaphragm failure. Sounds like the engine was losing manifold pressure (boost) through the vent hose that goes to the tank.

The older cummins had a hand primer pump and a glow plug in the intake manifold for cold weather starts. You could use the hand pump to spray a little fuel into the intake with alittle heat from glow plug for easier cold starts.
