I have nothing but love for Watkins Shepard, but I have found a new gig

After almost 2yrs I, and not easily, am leaving WS...I needed to buy a new truck, went on Craigslist, and found a nice C2500...The owner happened to be a truck driver...We talked and it turns out his company is 7 miles from my home, WS' terminal is 120 miles away, and they haul, for the most part, asphalt and heavy metal...I now get to drive a KW9, very bad ### truck, making the same if not more money and I get to be home EVERY night with a 10min ride to work...I hauled some asphalt this weekend and it was nice and easy work...Just have to be careful not to get burned, but other than that, it's no touch! LOL They always load them to 80K but the truck handled it like I was hauling feathers...Me, and especially my wife, love the fact I will be home more...I had every weekend off running shortline but they weren't truly full weekends as I either had to drive 5hrs on Sunday to drop and hook trailer for Monday or drive to terminal on Sunday night so I could leave from there Monday morning...That was only because of distance I lived from terminal, if I lived closer I could have been home almost every night and I would not be leaving...But after almost 2yrs, I haven't been home 100 days and since an opportunity as good as this one presented itself, I can't refuse it...Again, I have nothing but Love for Watkins, they're an awesome company, I only wish they had a terminal closer to my home, I'd stay till I retired, I'm sure of that...Newbies looking at them, you won't find many "starter" companies this good, I have nothing negative to say about them, nothing...Be well and drive safe friends...

Way to go! The hot asphalt is 'no touch'? Does that mean the company supplies lumpers? JK, it's great to read a success story. Thanks. Safe Trip.

Congrats on finding a great gig... I hope it works out well for you, I also hope that you will continue
to hang out here and still give advice about W/S and trucking in general for us newbies.
    Best of luck.

That's awesome. What's the wife think? I bet she's ecstatic!

Home more often, sleeping in your own bed, that's great!

I work alongside alot of those belly dump milling/paving jobs,as DOT Summertime project inspection in Southern Oregon highways; I hope you have good luck with that work. It looks like good trucking work to me as well. Long hours it can be, wiht the right paving outfit! Thanks for all the insight into Watkins for the newb's/wanna-be's!

Keep an eye on the dumpman, mill operator, back up true and well.

    All the best!

We deliver the oil to the asphalt plant, not the finished product to the road crew...So far it's been from North Bend, OH to Louisville which is real nice as we end up close to home!...Today I delivered heavy metal from one Metalsa plant to another, doing the same tomorrow...Everything here is as close to gross as they can get you also but thankfully they use powerful trucks that are ungoverned!!!!!!!!!!!!!
