Iowa can be tough and is always up and down, especially with a flat. You have some steel and aluminum mills in the QC, but it seems like most of this business is either sewn up, or cheap. I would guess that a load of steel to Chicago/Gary would pay $400-450. Other than that, good luck. You are probably right that you will be better off bouncing back to Chi-town. Especially, if you have contacts in there.

That is why you rarely see my trucks west of I-35. The only decent rates are if you want to run between Western States. Even then they are lower than I care to run my trucks for.

That is why I am going to drop the western states off my registration come renewal time. Freight out there doesn't pay what it does in the eastern half, and is harder on the trucks with all the big hills.

Supply and demand. When rates are "high" more people are willing to do that type of work. More people enter the market and rates go down. People exit the market rates go back up.

That is why I like pulling a RGN, because a lot of people will pull a step or flat, but do not want a low boy, and we stay loaded, and are hauling good paying loads. It all depends on making sure you can get a load out of the area that you are going, or you better good a good one going in. We go to Colorado, but we know we are bouncing to Grand Island, so we get a good rate going in.

I'm a company driver and 100.00 is exactly what they pay me to tarp a full load. 50.00 for half tarp and 50.00 for xtra pick or drop.
