As a pilot, I was taught to always stay "ahead of the airplane". In aviation, you never want the airplane to take you somewhere your brain didn't take you 5 minutes earlier. The same principle can be applied to commercial driving. It is very hard to plan your next move while trying to maintain situational awareness. Establish a plan ahead of time then make small adjustments to the plan on the fly. When making adjustments enroute, we utilize the DECIDE method: Detect, estimate, choose, identify, do, evaluate. Repeat as nessicary

Was this in Ohio? I only ask because the last few weeks I've seen either one really scary Trans Am driver or a couple. Just yesterday one blew right past the open scales on 30 then about 20 miles later tried to turn around and head west but turned from the east bound granny lanes to the west bound granny and stopped traffic going both ways with no warning at all.

really no need to get out of the truck to walk your surroundings. (unless you can't see the surrounding area for some reason) you all should know your turning radius to be able to just look out the window to see if there's enough room.
and if you have to go deep. and if it can't be done. there is a gear called REVERSE. comes in handy and gets used A LOT in my truck.
2 weeks ago i made a delivery to a house. through a narrow fence opening. 1 mile up a dirt road. that most of us would say heck no i'm not going in there. this guy said there was a spot 1/4 mile further to turn around. i get up there and see nothing. had to back all the way down the road back through the fence to get out of there. wasn't that difficult. just time consuming.
but that guy driving on the grass. now that's funny. -
Generally, the employee parking is a good sign that you're at the wrong turn. One place I go to on my route a couple times a week though you pull right through their employee parking.

As a 'retread' I had to go back thru driving school. I told all the newbee students. If it doesn't look rught; STOP! Get out and walk it. Make SURE that's is where you want to go. Of course that advise was because I've gotten myself into rough spots that were a real ##### to get out of. Hope they listened.
