Stupid, dumb, no excuse. But I made the mistake.

I am harder on myself than any boss could be, you are correct when admitting to being human it shows more about you.

 

I watched one guy drop his trailer while moving through a school parking lot with hundreds of people around. It was when I drove for one of those drum and bugle corps on their summer tour. I pulled the equipment trailer, and the other guy pulled the mobile kitchen trailer (48ft) and he forgot to tug test after he hooked back up into it.

Pulling out of this school's parking lot on the way to our next destination, hundreds of people had gathered around to watch the city fireworks display. His trailer came off right there, going about 5-10mph, not 10 feet from where people were sitting.

Every time I stop somewhere, I check my 5th wheel pull to make sure no one pulled it while I was away. Also check airlines and pigtail before I go.

 

I'm a rookie an made a huge mistake my first week. I am very serious about having a great, unblemished record and a successful career but I already committed the cardinal sins. I got excited to be home after six weeks gone, was in a hurry, and definitely stupid. But I learned from it. I was backing into a very tight spot at a Pilot and could barely get my trailer into this primo spot I wanted. I kept getting out making sure I was going to fit. It was dark and I kept griping about the **** black truck with no marker lights but I was doing it right and like any rookie I'm over confident in my abilities. I was right where I thought I was going to fit when I screwed up. A "helper" appeared. I thought he had seen me struggling a little and was going to be my eyes on the ground... OOPS!! I backed up about five feet before I felt the resistance. I shook my head and got out to inspect the busted fiberglass on the other driver's truck he just guided me into. Walked back out and my helper had vanished. Go figure. An accident report tainted the whole weekend and I had to send my girl and the kids back to bed while I stayed up explaining to safety why I wanted to get a preventable... Ugh, it sucked but I learned early. Everything you do is on you. If you're not driving their truck, don't trust em!!

 

Make you feel better I took out an ATM first day alone.
And your post makes a valid point, safety over rushing over lives... I chose lives and safety. You can never be to safe.

 

As a pilot we use check lists for everything. It is a pain because of course we all have it memorized. But still we use them. I made one out for the air brake test to start out each day but I don't do an air brake test every time I should. It is good to learn from a mistake. Someday, when I make my first, I hope to learn myself.
