I'm fifty years old, and took an early retirement in 2009 and now I'm getting bored and looking to get back to work. Is having no verifiable work history for 3 years going to be a problem getting into trucking? Thanks for any input.

The big companies will be very hesitant to hire, the small to medium ones will question it, too.

You will need to verify how you could afford to live if you do find someone who would be willing to hire you.

Not meaning to discourage you, but it was an issue for me starting after working self employed and then taking classes for awhile.

Not necessarily. I was in your shoes. As long as you've got a stable work history throughout your career, companies will still take a look at you even though their "official" policy is that you needed to be employed within the last year. They know the economy sucks. They know many have just given up on finding work. They know that many are switching careers and it takes time to decide and follow through with a new one.

    Their main goal is SAFETY.

Being in your 50's with a clean driving record = safety. There are other factors, like being a home owner.

Check out Arnold Transportation Services. They worked with me on this. And I think they're a great company not just to begin with but for the long term.

I know some drivers go thru temp agencies to get back on that horse. And yes, temp agencies deal with otr companies too. Superior Driver Source is one that a close friend of mine tried.

I think too that some companies look for unemployment gaps as being a person who could have been in jail.

If you have a pension and filed taxes with the IRS, etc, they may need to see a copy of that as proof of income.

I believe when my husband started US Xpress in 2007, he had to have 2 or 3yrs of W-2's also. Don't remember if CRE did or not.

Many different ways to go on this.

Tell the truth. You took early retirement. You can prove that by bringing in your tax returns. Unless you are Mitt Romney. They are needing to prove where you are at because of homeland security. That have to prove that for 3 years but prefer 10.

Insurance companies look for recent experience. If you have been retired from Trucking, then you need a refresher course. But you do not say that. So I would tell you that you will have no problem getting a job as a newbie.

But you say you are 50 years old. ####, you are almost as old as me. In five years you will be. What are you looking to drive a HOVEROUND? :biggrin_25517:
