I just received my Class A license for New York State, and I have been pre-hired by Werner..I've heard good and bad but still not sure.. Are there any other companies out there in the New York City area that will take a recent graduate, that is better than Werner?...It seems when you first start these are the only companies that will hire you..So I don't expect much in the beginning anyhow. They all seem pretty much the same give or take.. I just don't want to go on that 6-8week expedition training period thinking "I made a big mistake". Jan.8 is my starting date.
Is there another way to get started in this industry beside working for these types of companies? (i.e. Swift,Werner,Schneider etc.).

I really dont know about Werner.Schneider seems to be a good place to start, and maybe stay for a few years. You have your CDL so make a few phone calls.I dont know if Roehl hires from your area, but give them a call and find out. They hire drivers right out of school.Just about any of the over the road companies hire inexperienced drivers and put them out with a trainer for a few weeks.Like I said Ck.out Schneider & Roehl, for starters.

Schneider isn't bad for a newbie. They have a lot of terminals in a lot of areas which makes life a little easier on the road. Swift - same thing. J.B. Hunt even has quite a few. Mega-carriers have mega-money. Which means if they don't spend it on their drivers (check their CPM, trust me, they don't!) then they're going to put it somewhere else FOR the drivers, like better terminals, good mechanics, etc.
That's not a bad way for someone to pay their dues in this industry. Smaller companies have their downsides too, you know. As a newbie, I'd look at the big companies...as for Werner...well...
If I had a pet that I wanted to have ride along with me while I was learning the ropes...I'd consider Werner. Other than that, I'd give 'em a pass...mainly because I have allergies to animals and you never know who had a pet riding along before they quit. Plays hell with your sleeping when you can barely breathe, right? -

????? January 8th is your starting date? You already went through school and are waiting till next year to go to orientation? Most every company out there will only allow you a few weeks after completing school before you attend orientation and go out with your trainer. Maybe Werner is trying to sucker you into a refresher course! If you wait longer than 2-3 weeks or so you will have to attend a refresher course to the tune of about $2500-3500!
I would highly suggest you find someone to drive for quickly! The are many companies to choose from in your area. Here is a website of some of the smaller ones you don't hear much about.
